Example Of Fight Club Movie Review

The novel and the film Fight club are prominent artistic achievements both in their own field of art. When we bring these two pieces of art together we get an excellent psychological and visual critique of capitalistic society, material world and mediocrity. However, there are some differences between the film and the novel opening different perspectives. In this paper I will try to analyze both Palahniuk's and Fincher's beginnings and endings and compare their perspectives on the story.
The novel and the movie begin with an intense situation where Tyler Durden holds a gun in the mouth of the narrator, whose name we don't know. Narrator explains that the two of them were friends and involves a girl named Marla Singer in the monologue. At this point we don't know what led to the critical event. Here is where the writer and the director take us back to where it all started. Now we see the Narrator as a lonely, depressed and unsatisfied person without the strength to change something in his life. I have to mention that the point where he meet Tyler in the novel has a certain erotic tone because it all happens on a nude beach and the Narrator seems to be attracted by Tyler. In the movie this is not the case since the two of them meet in an airplane. However, the movie also later reveals Narrator's certain admiration towards Tyler.
As the story goes writer and director present the events in a rather chaotic manner instead chronologically, but this seems justified because the idea is perfectly clear throughout the entire storyline. Jumping from one event to another helps us to fully understand chaos and confusion that is in our main character's head.
Throughout the novel and the film we realize that Tyler is actually a fiction of the Narrator and at the end we come to the same situation as in the beginning only now from a different perspective since we are introduced with the events that lead to this. We now realize that the main character is alone on the roof with the gun in his hand. His imagination, Tyler, wants to kill him but he also tells him that he is not going to die. At the end of the film Narrator pulls the trigger and hurts his cheek in order to destroy Tyler's existence. Once Tyler is gone the Narrator can take control over his life, cope with his own issues and be with the girl he loves. The surrounding buildings that were the symbol of capitalistic society are falling down. However, the novel gives us different closure. Narrator wakes up in a mental institution and talks to the psychiatrist whom he sees as God. He sounds quite delusional. Here we get the impression that Tyler is not dead, but still exists in the body of our main character. His sentences remind us on the ones that Tyler would say.
Different endings are giving us two paths of the further story. The movie gives us closed ending. Tyler is gone (at least it seems that he is gone) and Marla is there so we can say that it is a happy end. The ending in the novel does not give us clear answer whether Tyler is dead or not. Instead it leaves this question opened. Marla is not there since Narrator is in a mental institution, she writes to him though.
