Fight Club is novel written by Palahniuk Chuck. It centers on an unknown Narrator, who works as a specialist (product recall) for an anonymous car company. His job is very demanding and causes him a lot of stress. He develops insomnia due to the jet lags as a result of the frequent business trips. The narrator goes to seek treatment where he meets a doctor who encourages him to attend a testicular cancer victim’s supports group. This is to help him understand what real suffering feels like. The narrator even though he does not have testicular cancer decides to follow the doctor’s advice. With time he realize that sharing with the group members help alleviate his condition (insomnia).
Although this is a unique treatment, it works very well with the narrator. During one of the secessions he meets another “faker”; Marla Singer. The lady also visits the group under false pretenses. This reminds the narrator that he is not different from Marla since he is also a “tourist” who did not belong there. They build a friendship relationship but the narrator starts to hate her. He blames her for his problem of not been able to sleep or crying. After a disagreement, the two decide to avoid each other by attending different support groups. However, this turns to be challenging as his insomnia returns.
The narrator introduces us to man called Tyler Durden. Tyler is an extremely mysterious character by every means. He allows the narrator to stay in his house after an explosion destroys his condominium. This was not a kind gesture as Tyler asks him for a favor. The narrator is supposed to hit him as hard as he could. Both of them then form a habit of fist fighting and they enjoy it. This move gives birth to the establishment of the “Fight Club”. Fight club is a place where many men with temper issues go to fight.
Marla after a while notices that the narrator had stopped attending his support group. She calls him after she had taken an overdose of a drug in an attempted suicide. Tyler is the one who rescues her when he picks the phone and hears her rambling. The narrator is confounded and Marla is confused when Tyler embarks on an uneasy affair with her (Marla). Marla never came to know about the existence of fight club or the relationship between the narrator and Tyler. The narrator at same point wonders if both of them (Tyler and Marla) were the same person. This was because they were not seen at the same moment.
Marla later explains to the narrator that he was Tyler. His state of mind has deteriorated due to the effects of insomnia. Tyler actually was his different personality when he was “asleep”. He set out to stop Tyler when he plans to blow up a building. Tyler was going to use homemade bombs and he was planning to die. This action will certain led to the narrator’s death as well. However, Tyler was usually one step ahead of the narrator. The narrator is helped by Marla when she appears and Tyler disappears.
The narrator decides to commit suicide as his first decision alone. He waits for the bomb to explode but Tyler had mixed paraffin so it malfunctions. He shoots himself with a gun (Tyler had it) and wakes up in “heaven”. However, later we see that he was in a mental hospital. The book ends when some hospital employees approach him and tell him they were project members. They inform him their plans were continuing and they were waiting for Tyler to return.
