Prior to 1910, film makers such as Hollywood were using archaic crude techniques to produce movies. It is interesting how this company struggled to advance its production techniques so as to meet the changing needs, tastes and preferences of the market. Film makers lucidly and dramatically developed a range of cinematic techniques for telling stories. Producers focused on division and classification of labor in the workplace, detailed planning and standardization and split-up of commencement from performance work. Various companies such as Hollywood continued to strive so as to own many production houses and respond to social and cultural pressures that were believed to be of utter importance in the film industry.
In the 1920s, people continued to understand the importance of cinema, and many of them continued to embrace it. However, sheer entertainment value of cinema was not always reconciled, and short films started to redefine their themes, styles and target audience. In 1926, Vitaphone programmers were able to produce movies by incorporating musical shorts and sound track. Rapid population growth and urbanization led to the development of new market for commercial entertainment that implied more profits to film makers. Apparently, it is atrocious how France, Russia and Germany influenced the growth and developments in the film industry. An encounter with the Russian films of this time is puzzling. The films appeared to be taking a different direction that can generally be described as out-of-date and wrong. This raises the question as to whether the Russian films were protected from the cultural developments that were sweeping across the domain.
The film industry continued to experience rapid developments till the wake of WWII. The war disrupted not only the production of films but also the marketing and distribution. Administrators interfered with the activities of film makers by specifying the themes that they wanted to be featured in the films. The polemical approach impacted destructively on the film industry, and its confrontational effects were felt the world over. The American film producer, Hollywood, was apparently not distraught by the effects of the war. This is attributed to its workers experience in dealing with challenges, as well as multiplicity in the line of business. However, various ethical issues became prevalent in the industry, and there was a need for governments to regulate the operations of large companies and protect consumers.
Eisenstein’s urge to plumb artistic abilities of films made him ambitious and a groundbreaking director. He believed that propaganda would be politically efficacious if it were artistically effective. His silent movies are particularly appealing, and the events in his movies make the audience to develop an irresistible compulsion to continue watching the movie. What makes the films more interesting is how the characters communicate without dialogue but use title cards and muted gestures. It is interesting how the characters exchange the cards and gestures. Characters face the camera in reverse-shot skirmishes creating a sense of absurdity.
The engagement of audiences ascends more meanderingly. However, this technique of producing movies might not be very appealing to a large audience considering that most of them are used to communication through word-of-mouth. However, it is outrageous that the production of silent movies reduced immensely as time went by leaving the hearing-impaired persons with nothing to celebrate. Silent films that can currently be found suffer from suppression cuts and misplaced frames and scenes making them appear like poorly-edited films. The film industry has successfully gone through several challenges especially in the post war period to be what it is today.
