Between the age of six and 13 year, nothing was so intriguing and engaging to me more than computer games. While my friends were busy playing outdoor games, I use to stay in my room playing computer games. Smidge seven years old, my parents began to notice an unusual increase in my weight. Admittedly, most of the games were so engrossing, and I would pause quite often to eat cookies and snacks that normally I stashed in my room as I was probably preparing to start a different level of a game or just resting. The rate at which I was gaining weight was so worrying. Recalling vividly, one day I companied my mum to a local health facility to see her doctor and an idea struck her that we should also see a professional to advise us on what to do regarding my seemingly incessant weight gain. The professional was so helpful; after asking me some questions mostly on how I spent my free time, he ruled out the possibility of inactivity as being the causation of my weight gain (because I told him I am a determined cyclist) but was quick to note that I was eating unhealthy foods. As I would later learn the professional was actually a dietician even though he was overly knowledgeable in various other fields too. I was tremendously impressed by how this individual could be so much knowledgeable. This was my first encounter with a dietician.
A few years on, after completing my O-level education, I was employed part time in a factory that dealt with animal feeds. In the same factory was also a dietician who was by all means exceptionally knowledgeable (just like the dietician I met at the local health facility). Pointedly this two people were remarkably smart, and I could not help imagining myself being equally (if not more) well-versed like the two. I later consulted my former teachers who informed me that my subject combination permitted me to pursue a career in dietetics.
I like volunteering during my free time. Community nutrition is my major area of interest and in this light, I mostly volunteer in children homes where I am more often than not served with the responsibility of offering nutritional advice to the administrators of the homes. I also recently volunteered in an adult center. Professedly, volunteerism has helped me appreciate the importance of empathy in helping people feel good about their ostensibly bad conditions.
Currently, my short term goal is to complete course in dietetics and obtain an undergraduate degree. However, I also find a career in business quite interesting, and since I do not wish to forgo any of the two (dietetics and business) I have formulated my long term goal to be a combination of the two; in the long-term I envision owing an organization that specializes in dietetics. I am a hardworking individual who has nurtured a culture of reading indiscriminately. I am also extremely empathetic and always take other people’s problems as my own- I am an understanding person who strives to get into other people’s feelings especially when approached by a person for advice. I understand (through reading) that for any profession in healthcare, empathy is an indispensable ingredient. Besides, I am a careful listener who is able communicate to communicate effectively with everyone. I must admit that I normally become intensely anxious (which at times turn out to be a panic) whenever I am in a difficult situation even though I am gradually learning to use relaxation and controlled breathing to help me curb this weakness.
