After Earth
Freudian Analysis
Kitai Raige wants to be a ranger just like his father. His superego controls him as he tries to qualify as ranger. His id comes to light when his father asks him to return to the ship. The ultimate test for Kitai comes when he has to fight the fear-smelling monsters. He has to overcome his fear to survive.
Jungian Analysis
Kitai evinces his bravery when he refuses to go back to the ship. Will Smith, playing Cypher Raige, is Jaden Smith’s father in real life, and he plays the same role in the movie. He drives his son to overcome his fear. The movie depicts characters who can only survive by facing their fears, which is Will Smith’s candid message to his son in the movie and real life.
I am John
I am John, a novel I read in high school, is the movie I intend to film. It is about a story of a young boy searching for identity.
Freudian Analysis
The boy, John, is raised in prison where he is exposed to the evil way of life. His father teaches him about another life that is the exact opposite of what he has experienced over the years. He then helps him to escape prison and offers him a map to find his mother. His godly side (the superego) comes to light as he endeavors to find his mother.
Jungian Analysis
The movie depicts a boy who, despite bad experiences in prison, portrays a positive attitude and personality when he escapes from prison. The boy is reserved and refuses to do anything that he had seen in prison. He understands antisocial behavior but is oblivious of his own godly acts.
