A sensitive, yet realistic movie about the life and work of a popular Mexican artist, “Frida” tells the story of Frida Kahlo, a young woman who begins to paint after a trolley accident in which she was badly injured, bringing her close to her death. Although she felt the consequences of that accident throughout her life through insupportable pain, she managed to fight death with creativity, internal emotion, passion, inner feelings and talent, becoming a painter. The movie presents some of her works, which indicate a strong style, vivid passion and intense emotions, marked through the use of strong, dark colors. Likewise, Kahlo’s paintings also reflect the symbolic representations of the patriotism, and love for the country, as the elements and characters that she draws are enrooted in the Mexican land and culture. Similarly, the movie suggests that Frida’s paintings are a reflection of her inner fears, concerns, and of her pain. As such, many of her paintings portrait bloody women, ill or death women on the death bed, which suggest her own fear of dying, but also translate her pain, caused by the trolley accident.
The movie is an expression of Frida’s sensibility and her artistic side, but it also describes the artists’ private life and her love story with Diego Rivera, a muralist painter with whom she engaged in a faulty marriage, as both cheated on the other. Nevertheless, “Frida” illustrates a passionate love story, based on jealousy and possession, which the artist also expresses in her paintings. When Rivera asks Frida to marry him, Frida, being aware of Rivera’s nature, incapable of being faithful to a single woman, asks him to be loyal to her, and this is their agreement to get married. Nevertheless, they soon find out that they cannot resist seeing the other one involved in another relation and this leads them slowly to their separation. After repeated extra conjugal relationships from both sides, Frida meets Leon Trotski, with whom she has an affair, causing much jealousy to Rivera, who asks Frida for a divorce. The movie indicates that Trotski was murdered soon after this episode, and it suggests that Rivera might have been involved in Trotski’s death, as the police arrest Frida, when they cannot find Rivera. From this moment on, “Frida” focuses on the evolution of Kahlo’s disease, showing how she asks for her tows to be removed as they became gangrenous, and then her leg needs to be amputated, which makes Frida invalid, incapable of going out of the bed. But despite the fact that her health continues to worsen, Frida continues to work, which is a sign that through painting the artist relieved her pain, putting it all her suffering on pieces of papers, giving them the color of her atrocities.
The movie depicts accurately the painter’s life, and its realization follows Kahlo’s original vision. The movie director, Julie Taymor, creates the perfect scene for presenting Frida’s life, as well as her inner feelings, her odd imagination and her fascinating artistic sense. After seeing this movie, I have learned the beautiful life of an unconventional artist, filled with anxious passion, vivid expression of jealousy and pain, covered in the blatant lines, shades and colors of agony, but also ecstasy. I consider that Julie Taymor represented Frida’s biography in an artistic manner, harmonizing the content, style and personality of the artist in an accurate manner, doubled by the fact that Frida is played by a popular and beloved Mexican actress, Selma Hayek, who manages to express both Frida’s frenetic personality and her unusual artistic style.
