Gender, race and class are social constructs which help to discriminate people from one another. It is bounded by culture. People segmented in each other these experience different kind of behavior in the outer world. Men and women are discriminated, the white and colored face differences in attitude in the society and the haves and the haves not too face distinct behaviors from one another in the society. Difference of behavior is dominant mainly in the workplace. A black woman is often subjected to sexual harassment as compared to a white woman in the same organization. It is not always the color that decides their fate, gender too plays a vital role in these situations. Even in companies like Goldman Sachs and Bayer AG, employees face gender discrimination. (Updegraff, 2011)
Throughout history it has been seen that certain laws that are made benefit one group over another. There are few laws of the land which was constructed to benefit everyone in the society. But after its fabrication it is seen that one community benefits more than the other. This is common place mainly in Indian societies. There are few laws made only for the tribal class so that they can move at par with others in the society. But gradually, it has been noticed that even the non-tribal, by just getting a tribal certificate are availing that privilege. For example, a tribal student requires 40% to get admission in a good college. So the non-tribal students who are not eligible otherwise are taking admission by getting the tribal certificate. Hence competition is rising. (Banerjee, 2008) Thus we see that there is a wrong utilization of law in the land and one community is benefitted more than the other.
Gender and racial inequality is a widespread problem in the United States. The election of Barack Obama as the US president did not change the fate of the African American much. The wealth gap that is lingering between the white and the black houses are huge. A survey in 2002 revealed that the asset holding of whites are $90,000 and blacks are only $6000. (Kuiper, 2011) This statistic suggests that racial discrimination is still entrenched America. The African Americans were not allowed to take admission in good colleges along with the whites. Even children were not spared in this game of discrimination. In America, female students are discriminated in the classroom too. It has been seen that faculties who belonged to the oppressed group succumb to oppression more in classroom settings. (Collins, 2000). It is seen that the sociocultural growth of children is hampered due to this.
The very foundation of gender discrimination is laid on the religion. The Muslim women are not entitled to recite their prayers inside the mosque, a Hindu woman is supposed to wash her husband’s feet and drink that water and in Roman Catholics even Mother Teresa refuses to get the honor of cardinal. (Kissling, 2012) Even in this world of modernization where women claims to be at par with men, religious traditions like Sati is still prevalent in corners of Asia.
Race is purely a social construct. It is neither an essence nor an illusion. It is a just a sociopolitical struggle which is dominant and still prevalent in our society. It is self-contradictory but yet reinforcing which is subjected to the society’s law and regulations. It has become the very part of the society which now is difficult to eliminate completely.
Pop culture has enormous influence on the society. It mainly targets the youths and the college goers who are vulnerable to adapt anything that is attractive. As they are the people who mainly constitute the entire population, it is easy for pop culture to percolate in society. The media too is extremely pervasive in our culture. With attractive advertisements they entice the young crowd. Many advertisements take help of a women’s body to display their products. The body is displayed extensively to excite young adults to buy that product. The body of a female is used sensually so to grasp the eye ball of the viewers. It depicts explicit sexuality of women only.
