The video featured in the classroom brings out the true picture of how the media industry presents illusive images before our eyes. The hefty amount of money America spends on advertisements every year could be used erecting a lot of school buildings and funding education for multitudes of students unable to pursue higher studies due to pecuniary problem. Most of the ads we watch on TV are focused on gender stereotypes. Take for example the ads of Greek Yogurt and Mr. Clean. These two items cannot be specifically related to any gender in particular. They are simple products consumed and used by men and women alike. Mr. Clean ad shows a woman cleaning her kitchen with her daughter pointing out the spots she missed; thereby blatantly stereotyping that house cleaning comes under women's share of chores. But cleaning house or utensil cannot be broadly associated with any gender. In my house I have seen my father helping my mother by washing utensils and running the vacuum. So the picture presented in the ad is utterly misleading. As regards the ad of Greek yogurt, is Greek yogurt only consumed by women? No, but then why are women only demonstrated in their ads?
Advertising is a reflection of our society. It is apparent that the ad-makers try to sell the products by boldly displaying sexist ads. The recent Super bowl ad of GoDaddy.com in which a woman plants a slimy kiss on the mouth of a geek augments the stereotypical idea that a woman needs to look sexy and a man intelligent. In the commercial of Mercedes-Benz: Soul, we see a man who has a Mercedes-Benz being chased frantically by a crowd of ravenous women. The ad offensively stereotypes that women pursue wealthy men. In all the ads women are perceived as sexual objects. Ad makers try to exploit the sex appeal of a woman in drawing attention to their products. Cashing in on the societal expectations, marketers try to boost up their sales by gearing the ads towards a particular gender. By letting this sort of ads rage on screen we actually help the marketers set the stereotypes of our genders.
