The theorist appropriate to my development, both personal and external is Erikson. He believed there were numerous stages to define our potential. These stages occurred as a stepladder, where at a given time, we would either stimulate our faults, or our desire. These events open and closed every few years, with the window of time only lengthening as we grew older. What would begin as a method of trusting my neighbor, will conclude in whether I am satisfied with style of life. In respect to Erikson’s system of evaluations, so far, I’m doing alright.
I recognise Erikson’s placement of psychosocial development, and it best describes my series of trials. As in, with his evaluations and categories in mind, I agree that certain events happened to me within a certain window of time, and within the order he listed. Yet, more than anything, I acknowledge and appreciate that at this point of my existence I am respectful within Erikson’s Generatively vs. Stagnation stage. How I apply to this occurrence isn’t short of gratitude.
Generativity vs. Stagnation is Erikson’s term for the second-adulthood. It occurs before the self-evaluation of nostalgia, and after we had carved through the first adult stage of developing long-term relationships, or have failed to do so. The Generativity/Stagnation platform is an extension of how we build relationships with a larger group of people, the outside world. This concept is the seventh level of social development, and people may chose to open up further or progress in closing down. As in, we have the ability to exceed the self and spread out (generativity), or dwell and decline into public inactivity (stagnation). In short: this a time of showing how much we Care.
Fortunately, I fit this window of development for the better. Not only am I the right age for this period of time, but I have also succeeded Erikson’s preceding dilemmas. Given those conditions, I have earned the Generativity/Stagnation conflict and it has been most rewarding.
I am a teacher, a stepparent, a mentor, and an advisor. I am constantly in need, I am constantly giving, and I am constantly seeking ways to support and revamp and be of use as well as remain balanced. I am challenged physically, intellectually, and spiritually and it’s exciting that these aspects are not going to wane any time soon. With so many surrounding influences and my partaking in their achievements, I really have no choice but to be Generative. And to remain that way.
Seeing thoughts become an image is encouraging and I am satisfied with the possible future. I recognise that I am a resource to those around me. Plenty of my professional and personal relationships are with a younger crowd. The contribution surpasses myself as helping my students and younger colleagues is developing I may not be a part of. I am fortunate to nurture people who may or may not use my ideas but in our time together, the time I commit to them, with outlast me. It will be my accomplishment to trigger the slightest and better idea in someone on how to go about something. This is the variety of thinking that keeps me from deflating into a stagnate state.
Fitting into Erikson’s system was not a stretch for me. I am successful because I enjoy social interaction. I am efficient because my actions have been more fruitful than reclusive. Generativity defines me and I am grateful for the opportunities I shaped with it. With this in mind, whenever that long moment of rethinking how I lived arrives, I will have no trouble accepting that it was a lifestyle well-spent with integrity.
