Cultural Landscape
The strong economy of Hartford is primarily based on the diverse business. There are a lot of different companies, which are situated in this city. These companies produce plenty of different products, such as nuclear reactors, space suits and aircraft engines. The economic activity of Hartford was greatly influenced by the globalization. As we live in the time of advanced technologies, there are a lot of demands for different products. The products, which are produced in Hartford, are of great importance and there are great demands for them. The humanity is now actively exploring the space and that is why there are demands for such products as aircraft engines and space suits (City Data).
There are five components of economic globalization. The first component is the global communication systems, which are created in order to link the people (Brysk). This component is very important because Hartford is considered to be a telecommunications center (City Data). The second component is transportation systems, which give the opportunity to move different goods quickly by air, sea, and land (Rowntree et al.). This component is also important because Hartford includes a lot of firms and enterprises, which require different goods. The third component is the agreements, which encourage free trade. As it was mentioned previously, Hartford includes different companies and it is very important that import and export was not restricted by government. The fourth component is the transnational business strategies. These strategies are very helpful in creating different advantages for profit growth. Finally, the fifth component is the army of international workers. They are the powerful economic force and with the help of these workers it is possible to reach new heights in business (Rowntree et al.)
Undoubtedly, the globalization can be considered as one of the most controversial issues nowadays. Those who support globalization believe that it gives the opportunity to raise prosperity for the whole world. However, the critics are sure that the globalization is beneficial only for those who are already prosperous. There are three main elements of the controversy about globalization. The first element is called Pro-Globalization. The advocates of the globalization are sure that this process benefits all nations and all peoples. It helps to reduce barriers between countries, and it gives the opportunity to trade. Moreover, the supports of pro-globalization state that those countries, which are open to the global economy, have more economic success (Rowntree et al.). As Hartford includes a lot of firms and companies, which are open to the global economy, it is obvious that we can relate this element to our city. The second element is the critics of globalization. Those who criticize the globalization state that it is not a natural process and it creates great inequity between rich and poor countries. Those critics also argue that forests are cut for timber export. The third component is the middle position. Many experts argue that the globalization is unavoidable. They also state that it is the need for strong governments and globalized markets (Rowntree et al.).
Geography aims at describing and explaining the differences, which differentiate one piece of the world from another. This term is called areal differentiation. This term can be referred to another one, which is called cultural landscape (Rowntree et al.). In the 1950s, this term rarely appeared in print, but by the 1990s, this term arrived in professional circles. The humanity changed a lot of space into places, which are unique. Places can tell us a lot of things. They can tell us how people interact with the nature and themselves. They can also tell where there tense relationships and where there is peace. People change the places and that is why these places are so different. This is how the concept of cultural landscape is related to the areal differentiation (Rowntree et al.).
The concept of cultural landscape is considered to be the visible and material expression of human settlement. This concept reflects different human needs, such as work, food, and shelter. Moreover, the cultural landscape is aimed at either bringing people together or keeping them apart, because this concept is the marker of cultural values and attitudes. There are a lot of different cultures, which vary greatly. The cultural landscapes also vary in the same way (Rowntree et al.). If to speak about Hartford, it is needed to say that this city is not same as it was before. It changed greatly with all those business towers, fast-food outlets, and shops (City Data).
The term population pyramid is used in order to provide the information about how the population of certain places grew or fell. The population pyramid of Hartford shows that the majority of male representatives is in the age of 30-34 years. Moreover, there are less than one percent of male representatives, who are aged 80-84 years. The same situation is with female habitants (Tripod).
The gender gap is the concept, which is used in order to define the equality between men and women. This concept can also be related to the concept of gender roles, which in turn is aimed at defining such factors as salaries, participation in politics, and other important issues (Rowntree et al.). Different studies show that men die younger, while women live longer. Studies show that in Hartford the number of female representatives in the age of 80-84 is bigger than the number of male representatives in the same age (Tripod).
