Hazard Vulnerability Analysis involves a critical examination of various areas in life to determine the openness to potential physical or emotional danger and the conclusion that can be drawn from it. After conducting a HV analysis in my work environment, I identify various hazards that need to be addressed in an emergency management plan.
On the area of natural hazards, the major areas of concern would be: earthquakes, extreme temperatures, drought, wild fire and epidemics. These would seem to be more prevalent in this region since it’s an area not well supplied with rainfall and so it’s relatively dry. Temperatures at times get too low to an extent of having cases of morning frost which destroys most of the vegetation leading to drought, accompanied by strong winds, which brings with it epidemics, for instance of tuberculosis.
In technological hazards, areas that would need to be addressed include: electrical failure, transportation failure, fuel shortage, water failure, internal fire and exposure to hazardous materials. Electricity is a major contributor of technological advancement and its failure would lead to stagnation of major projects or slow production of goods and supply of services, eventually leading to slow economic growth. In addition to transportation, fuel and water failure, it would cause a firm to come to a standstill.
Human hazards, such as trauma, terrorism, infant abduction and labor action are other areas to be addressed in an emergency management plan. Trauma and terrorism would cause mental disturbance causing low productivity in an individual. Lack of proper working conditions such as poor pay and poor administration would cause mass actions in a firm and need to be addressed in order to have constant labor.
Hazardous materials would be an area of concern in this working environment and so need not be addressed.
