While it has no universal definition, a heat wave can possibly be described as an extended duration of abnormally high temperatures which is in some cases accompanied by excessively high humidity. That which may be considered a heat wave in one region, could be normal weather in other regions. Hence, the weather conditions vary from region to region. The heat wave has been described as the single most catastrophic phenomenon associated with weather changes. Heat wave catastrophes accounted for close to two thousand two hundred deaths in the world. This was much too high compared to close to one thousand deaths occasioned by floods and the one hundred and fifty deaths caused by hurricanes. In the town, that I grew up, heat waves were rampant, and their effects were among the most undesirable of human experiences. The first and most notable effect of the heat wave is the electricity outages. The power outages can be attributed to the increased operations of the automatic air conditioners. The air conditioners could automatically start at around three o’clock in the afternoon and run up to seven o’clock in the evening. The heat retained by the buildings and the earth could make the night temperatures to shoot up as well. This prompted high electricity bills in homes. The second effect of the heat wave is the physical damage on the highways. There were decidedly conspicuous cracks on the roads. This could cause many deadly accidents. The third and last of the most notable effects of the heat wave is mental and sociological in nature. Heat wave causes stress and depression to the individuals in the region. Such feelings and states may impact negatively on the performance of the residents. In conclusion, it is worth noting that the heat wave is indeed the worst of all weather-related catastrophes. Its impacts are both mental and physical.
