Hinduism is held together by four major concepts—karma, samsara, dharma and the caste system—which work together to lead to the self liberation, or moksha. On this road to freedom, Hinduism is guided by dharma, which is the ultimate balancing power that operates the entire universe. It delicately but unfailingly controls all of creation. In addition, dharma refers to the soul’s unique journey. Moving upward is a matter of living in alignment with this universal law of dharma, which is essentially truth itself. Dharma is represented in similar fashion from the universe to the individual human life: there is a natural rhythm and order that must be followed in order for the individual to seek his or her soul’s ultimate destination.
Karma is believed to be the universal law of action and reaction, and it is highly influenced by intention. Hinduism believes that without selfless and motiveless expectation, acts of virtue do not remove one self from the endless cycle of suffering. The only way to remove one self from this cycle is to be freed from karma and the ongoing cycle of rebirth. Samsara is this
ongoing form of reincarnation, or the continual circulation of souls through different entities and dimensions. Karma conducts and regulates samsara in the flow of death and rebirth that every living being experiences. Hinduism believes that the ultimate aim of existence is the break from samsara, and to finally reach moksha, which is final liberation through the eventual attainment of God-realization. The caste system, though presently outdated, still influences Hinduism today in the way that is marks progress in the journey toward moksha. The upper tier of Brahmins is believed to be closer to this ultimate liberation from samsara. Just as these castes take generations to establish, so does the nature of stepping towards and into a state of unchanging bliss and fulfillment.
