Galileo gained his claim to fame in the 1600s, and is now considered to be the so-called ‘father of modern science’ for his tremendous contributions to many fields of science. Galileo had invented a more fine-tuned telescope which allowed him to see Jupiter’s moons, the rings around Saturn, Venus’ phases, as well as sunspots and the moon’s rugged surface. He gained wide notoriety when he opposed everyone’s beliefs about the Earth being the center of the universe, fighting the church and scientists alike to prove his theories.
Peter the Great became historically famous for his role in pushing Russia into what was considered a leading state within Europe and away from the medieval era. His roles in centralizing government, modernizing the army, created a navy, and also increased the control of the local peasants. He is most widely known for his aggressive decisions while handling foreign policy matters. Peter the Great was also physically very empowering, as he stood almost 7 feet tall and had a very broad physique.
Loved and respected by many, Louis XIV actually still holds the title of having the longest reign out of all the European leaders in history during his reign over France. He is remembered historically for expanding France’s borders during a run of successful wars that he had lead, which in turn resulted in France becoming the top nation of Europe in regards to power. Spain had once been France’s enemy, but Louis XIV had eventually formed an alliance between the two countries, which led to social and political reforms which paved the way for other countries to follow. Louis XIV had a true love for the arts and actually almost bankrupted the royal treasure with his doting financial supports.
The Reign of Terror is historically known for being a mass killing by France to hundreds of its people in a protest of decadence and rage in September of 1793. If citizens were accused of being an enemy of the revolution, they were arrested and then executed without being granted a trial to prove their innocence. This terrifying time in France’s history lasted a long 15 months and it has been estimated that almost 40,000 people were killed. The French flag was actually created during this time period, created with the colors of blue, white and red. The blue represented the Parisian bourgeoisies, the white represented the army chiefs, and the red represented blood shed throughout the wars.
