Personal Ethical Action Plan
Personal Values
Values, to me, are the driving force of life and form the basis upon which I check my accomplishments. I believe that even though success can be measured in many ways, no matter how successful one is in life, without values upon which their decisions and principles are governed, their success can be rendered meaningless. I draw my values from my culture, upbringing and my sense of morality and purpose, drawn from my experience and interactions in the society. I can summarize my values as follows:
Spirituality
Coming from a background of staunch religious upbringing, I value my spirituality. The belief in a higher authority helps me to focus on accountability beyond the standards set by man. It also helps in situations where common logic cannot help solve an ethical dilemma. Spirituality offers direction and counsel in all spheres of life.
Industry
Acceptance
Acceptance leads to contentment; which is an important virtue for those who want to live a life of fulfillment. I think it is important to accept things as they are and recognize those situations which we can change and those which we cannot change. This helps in living life with realistic expectations and helps us to focus on improving things that we possibly can. Accepting people the way they are is also helpful in nurturing relationships and avoiding friction.
Mindfulness
It is important to be mindful of others. This eliminates selfishness and guides objective decision making. Being mindful also influences our decisions on matters like caring for the environment, relationships in business and family, and guides our actions which may have an effect on others.
Personal professional purpose
Above and beyond the required duties in the workplace, it is important to have individual professional purpose to govern one’s actions and decision in the market place. These values will ensure that one stands firm in cases where they are expected to compromise on ethical issues. Without clearly defined set of values, one is bound to fall for anything.
I would like to engage in ventures which impact the society positively and contribute to improving the lives of people. I would like to contribute my skills in creating businesses that are sustainable and add to the community instead of taking away from it. The business should make reasonable profits and engage in CSR ventures to improve the lives of the community.
As an investor who has the hope of going into my own business, I would like to start up a company which will change the lives of its employees, nurture their talents, help them grow in knowledge through training and mentorship, and offer benefits which improve the status of their families. I do not believe in acquiring cheap labor or establishing companies in countries where labor laws go against human rights. I want to be remembered for having contributed to the growth and development of my employees, and improving the lives of the community.
