While driving with lot stoner, the narrator is more attentive and responsive to lot stoner. This is most probable as he is juvenile and has not seen much of what there is to experience in life. His worries then are minimal; those of what would happen to him when the parents found out that he quit school. However, when riding with the truck driver, he has more issues to get him worried. This includes his wife and the recently impregnated Carline. That shows by how much the narrator has matured between the two rides.
The narrator is loving and caring. Before leaving, he is seen kisses his girlfriend goodbye. It also shows that the narrator has got someone who shares his feelings with. After Jesus stoner’s birth, Willie tells him that he is a nice person. This adds a rubber stamp to the fact that the narrator is a loving and caring person. The narrator is patriotic to his country. He is fully aware that Russians are way ahead of them in the aerospace technology sector. For this reason, he sets out to the aerospace industry so as to help his fellow countrymen to build rockets. The aim of this journey is to see to it that his country is not left behind and that they catch up with their fellow counterparts; Russia.
The narrator can also be said to be well educated. While, in the truck with Lot Stoner, the narrator had just left college. He says that vector analysis did no longer interest him. From this statement, it is clear that the narrator was an academician. He had a passion for reading. It was so until when he had the wake-up call that he had to leave. With that, he left the engineering class to go and participate in real life engineering at the aerospace industry.
The view of the first peson is more prejudiced as compared to the reader’s point of view. In the first person’s point of view, the narrator will wish to have the reader see as though each and everything that he does is somehow right. The narrator in “Horizontal Snow” for example wants the reader to see that his quitting of college was justified. In the real world, this is not right. He should have been reprimanded. It was especially not understandable since he was almost graduating. The narrator is, therefore, not realistic.
The fact that the narrator impregnates Carline at the site of a rocket silo, yet this is the site where the missile, intended to reach Soviet Union is, is not mere coincidence. The writer is likening the situation caused by the making of the missiles to the situation of the pregnancy. The fact that Carline got pregnant at a silo, means that what they did is off beam. Due to this, the narrator and Carline did not have the decency to get a room. It is especially so since the narrator had a wife and carline was supposed to be getting married.
The child in carline’s womb is what the narrator wishes to liken with the situation of the missile developed. The child can either be a disaster; if the people around the narrator fail to understand that once a mistake is done it cannot be undone, or a blessing in the case that the baby unites the two and becomes a source of joy for the couple. Similarly, the missile situation could either cause disaster or calm. In the case that is launched, it would lead to an outbreak of combat. Alternatively, it would also lead to calm in the case that the U.S.A enemies learn that the Americans are also capable of going to war in the case of an attack.
