The emergency room in a hospital provides patients with primary care as per the first round management of possible illnesses and injuries. This paper focuses on the required observation phase and as per the provided instructions, I analyzed the emergency room of (Insert name of hospital). Accordingly, the analysis revolved around the medical environment in the emergency section of the chosen hospital. For a detailed description, while making sure one does not interfere with the medical personnel, it was best to carry out the observations on a weekend. To that end, the following sections present the operations that go on in apparently most of not all emergency rooms and if on a personal note, the television programs that focus on medicine are not exaggerated: the drama is real.
Foremost, it is worth mentioning that the emergency room of (Insert name of hospital) is ever busy, and if the employees are to expect a respite, a careful calculation revealed an average of three and a half minutes. In other words, the doctors and nurses are ever at work trying to ease the pain for some patients and saving the lives of the remaining factions. The rest non-staff individuals stand by with bated breath while those with a similar agenda as mine wait with keen eyes to ensure nothing goes unnoticed. Now, those who came through the doors harbored injuries ranging from flimsy paper cuts to the life threatening aftermaths of road accidents and attempted suicides. The hospital personnel make a commendable attempt to manage the steady flow of patients, but their numbers are evidently too high even for the experienced individuals working in the department.
Still, there are specific groups of people in charge of the multiple stages that go into creating preliminary tests for arriving patients. Nurses form the foundations as they carry out tests before and after a patient sees the doctor[s] on call. Subsequently, the physicians and their assistants care for the medical cases while surgeons focus on those who may need surgery. The mentioned persons require various equipment and tools to meet their responsibilities, and the hospital does not fail them on the same. For example, the every doctor and nurse had a stethoscope draped around his or her to assess the cardiac and respiratory wellness of the patients. At the same time, to mention a few more, there were scissors, steel bowls, and bandages on multiple carts and a cardiac monitor rested on one corner of the emergency room.
As I precariously placed myself in the background, to allow the different medical teams to handle their patients without interference, my nose picked up on an intense smell of medicine and probable spirits used for sterilization. Additionally, the emergency section solely focused on emergency cases such as heart attacks, appendix bursts, and the cases above in which the patients were at risk of losing their lives because of excessive bleeding after an accident. The place is also noisy; however, the neatly dressed nurses and doctors were evidently used to the noise. In fact, even in severe cases (such as one in which a young man was vomiting profusely), the nurses and doctors remained well-coordinated. A nurse would hand over necessary equipment to a physician and within a few minutes, the patient on whom they are focused would be stable enough to either go home or move to the wards. Now, the emergency section is open twenty-four hours a day seven days a week and for that reason alone it never lacks people. From the given assertion, it is acceptable if not expected to see people (who I assumed were friends and family members of the sick) walking around and sitting in the emergency room.
In conclusion, the importance of the emergency room remained palpable throughout my observation. As a nursing student, I hope to meet the necessary qualifications and become part of such an intricate system that makes up a hospital’s emergency room.
