The sexual culture has been a topic of great concern following critics that have faced members of the sexual minority. This is because according to the past, socials and religious beliefs, there only exists one sexual culture of which its heterosexuality. This is due to the way people have been brought up to view the sexual minorities. The society at large beliefs that heteronormativity is the only sexual orientation where man and woman have natural roles. Despite this belief there is the existence of the sexual minority, the queer people who recognize homosexuality as a sexual culture. This has been witnessed in recent activities where queer people have called for recognition of their rights as being among the available sexual cultures. This has been despite the constant efforts by the society to try and implicate the heteronormativity belief. However, this has faced great critics due to the number of queer people coming out and calling for recognition of their sexual orientation.
The heterosexual imaginary is a way of thinking that tries to hide the concept behind heterosexuality. This is in reference to the structure that heterosexuality takes in trying to build an organization where gender is structured from a biological view. This is through heteronormativity which recognizes heterosexuality as the only sexual culture whereby there are only two genders. These two genders are biologically correspondent to the role they assume in reproduction and sexuality. The heteronormativity according to Ingraham lecture also draws that only sexual attraction between members of the opposite gender is natural and acceptable. According to Ingraham, heterogender is the arrangement that is required by patriarchal in order to maintain social balance.
The heterosexuals are materialist feminist who believe in the unequal division of power in order to ensure that the natural genders take their role effectively. This is where man is the superior complex compared to women. It is through this procedure that there is inequality in the distribution of resources within social institutions. In this particular instance, heterosexuals try to use heterosexuality to reproduce heteronomativity where man is the superior complex, and the woman is supposed to be man’s subordinate. Through the Ingraham lecture, the gender system is established by heterosexuals to state that it is a taboo for man and woman to be equal in the society. Therefore, this tries to ensure that gender differences are maintained in order to facilitate the gender system theory. In order to maintain heteronomativity and ensure its reproduction, the continuation of the gender system is highly regarded in the modern society where women are men’s subordinates. The theory tries to argue that, unless there are differences, there will be no inequality.
Without the differences made to institutionalize heterosexuality where man and woman are differently identified, there would be no existence of gender. The heterosexual sexual culture tries to continue the heteronormativity belief through recognition of the biological sex as the only acceptable sexual culture from a biological perspective (Cameron, & Don 68). Due to the biological argument that the heteronomativity present were sex is dependent on males and females he heterosexual assumption would remain unaddressed and unquestioned. This is because this belief would be passed off to future generations where the belief would still remain unquestioned.
Based on studies, it is evident that white straight men are involved with other white men get intimate in order to boost their heterosexual masculinity. This is because they view themselves as a superior complex among the men they get involved with sexually. It is clear that the involvement of this practice by white men is to increase heterosexual realness. Critics also state that the lack of discussion of these practices has led to the emphasis that African Americans are more homophobic(Ward 417). This is because they are stereotyped since their sexuality is viewed as dangerous. This is since white men who have sex with other men are only interested in white men. This is due to their sexual preferences where they are more interested in having same sex with white men. The dude sex tries to illustrate this as a sexual repulsion among heterosexuals where one fails to identify themselves with their sexual preferences. The article tries to emphasize n the need to identify themselves with a particular sexual culture.
In an article where fathers talk to their sons about their sexuality, it is made clear that fathers expect their teen sons to be as heterosexual as possible. This is because they expect their sons to maintain the family values and reproduce (Solebollo, & Elliott 293). This is a scenario in which heterosexual fathers are in efforts to avoid the existence of other sexual cultures which may not be in their favor. These efforts are made by the fathers since they assumed it their role to ensure their sons are well modeled to fit the society. This is done to facilitate heteronormativity. This is since heterosexuality is implicated to eradicate the existence of homosexuality as a sexual culture. It, therefore, clear that we want them as straight as possible tries to facilitate the reproduction of heteronamativity as the only acceptable sexual culture as opposed to homosexuality which is regarded as unnatural and goes against biological sex studies.
Part Two
In a lecture by stein and Epstein sexual orientation is viewed as being more of a sexual identity rather than a sexual culture. This is through the essence that homosexual are expected to recognize themselves as members of a particular structure. The queer theory was founded in the late 90s where there was an increase in the number of individuals and political movements who were associated with the queer community. This is factor contributed to the development of the theory where there was need for a new rational way of thinking where the term gay and lesbian was viewed as an appropriate word.
The term queer was developed to represent the sexual minorities where there was a rise in the resistance of the use of labels to identify members of the queer community. The queer theory calls for the questioning of heterosexuality due to the binary and biological factors it aims at implementing by forcefully issuing each member of the society with their sexual preferences (Stein & Plubber 3). This goes against the sexual minorities since they require recognizing themselves as members of a different culture of which it is not heterosexuality but rather homosexuality. It is also made clear that culture plays a major role in shaping sexuality. Therefore, it is emphasized that queer politics should not be located in sexual practices or the identity that one may refers to selves as but rather in culture. This will provide a form of identity to members of different sex cultures.
In the article on drag Queens and Kings, identity is a major factor that influences the way the characters in the setting view themselves. This is attributed to the different identities where which they refer themselves with. This is opposed to a particular social setting where such individuals would have been generally referred to as transgender. As argued in the article, most of these individuals, though born male they do exhibit some characteristic which make them transgender since they are opposite of their biological sex. Through the queer theory, such individuals have been provided with the chance to identify selves with the sexuality that they may feel suits them. This is experienced where some of them identify themselves as women, others as transgender while some refer to themselves as gay. This is what the queer theory aimed at achieving through ensuring all members who may feel they do not belong among the heterosexual culture are given a chance to identify themselves to their culture of choice. This has been witnessed with the rise of queer people who are constantly calling for the recognition of their rights(Valentine, 45). This is unlike in the 90s where the named was first coined, and all persons who were male but female bodied were categorized as a transgender. The queer theory and queer movements have helped change this notion where they were given themselves personal identification of their sexual orientation. It is however stated that the transaction to transgender identification starts through identifying oneself as a homosexual. Through this first transaction one is able to acknowledge that they do not belong in the heterosexual culture, therefore, the start a journey to self-discovery where they are able to identify themselves with their orientation of choice where they fit. This is experienced in Fiona’s sexual urges to get involved in homosexual acts. Despite Fiona and her friends clearly being transgender, they all identified themselves differently. The social support group service they attended was for transgender people despite their different preferences. This was in order since they preferences and identities where some way in accordance to the transgender characteristics. The group however was supportive of the need for self-identification. The queer theory tries to ensure there is recognition of all individual rights since they are all equal despite their sexual orientation. There is also no need for generalizing people with a particular sex culture. With the need for civilization and the rise of members of the queer community, there is need to let all individuals identify themselves with their sexual identity of choice (Youth, Education, and Sexualities, 74). This makes it clear that heterosexual view goes against the sexual minorities by applying biological point of view to all people.
In the, “I know what I am” article, the individuals in this particular instance try to fight and identify themselves with a particular sex culture. This is not the culture which is implicated by the society where the society wants everyone to identify with heterosexuality. This is where members of different sex cultures are not provided with an opportunity to identify themselves with the culture of their preference. There is the need for a society to allow individuals to identify whatever sexual orientation that a person may feel they belong to. The queer theory is in support of this by calling for the uprising and the recognition of queer people as civilized members of the society who need be given a chance to personal identification. There is also need as in support of the queer theory where it states that heterosexuality is not the only available sex culture. This gives room to other sex culture in which members of the society may identify with confidently. This will be an effective method to stop generalizing people of different orientation within an identity that they may not feel comfortable being associated with. In essence, the queer theory tries to operate in challenging the heteronormativity belief where heterosexuality is recognized as the only sexual culture. Through this theory it is evident that there is the existence of other sexual cultures apart from, heterosexuality.
