The movie that I am reviewing is referred to as Forrest Gump. The movie was directed by Robert Zemeckis and was released in 1994. Forrest Gump highlights the life events of a male individual who was born with a below average intellectual capacity and was still able to accomplish tremendous things in his lifetime. The main actor, Forrest is able to get a place in the school’s football team and the army despite experiencing challenges with his legs and using leg braces. In addition, he sets up the shrimp trade.
I chose to view the Forrest Gump because it highlights the tenacity of a person experiencing intellectual challenges overcoming these obstacles to turn into a successful individual. I expected to learn how a person with such physical and intellectual challenges can accomplish significant things. In addition, I expected to understand how the main actor’s level of intellect does not have an effect on his capability to live a rewarding and complete life. Life may be demanding on occasions. These difficult experiences may make an individual lose hope. I expected to see how Forrest overcomes these obstacles.
The central point of the film is to live life and not to yield to the pressures of life. The film is about dealing with the challenges that an individual may face. The main actor, Forrest, goes through a number of challenges, but he manages to deal with them. He accepts himself the way he is and carries on with life. Despite his intellectual and physical obstacle, Forrest engages in activities that will enhance his life and that of his friends and families, for example, he expands his business and invests in Apple Corporation.
The filmmaker supports the central point by using the central characters. Forrest is portrayed as a serious, unemotional, and persistent individual. Therefore, his personality has elicited a large number of disagreements and criticisms. There are arguments as to whether his success is because of pure luck and his minimal intellectual capacity, or because of his capability to embrace life and internal forces. Jenny is his companion, his mate from early periods. Forrest has sentimental attitudes towards Jenny. Nevertheless, Jenny decides to rebel and experiment. This is observed by Forrest and her friends. Bubba is a naïve and honest individual who has ambitions but is not able to realize it. Finally, Taylor is a down-to-earth and cynical person, but he demonstrates how suitably he treats Forrest by teaming up with him on the vessel and attaining triumph together in spite Forrest being crippled during the Vietnam War.
I learnt that disability is not inability. There are numerous stereotypes regarding intellectual and physically handicapped people. The film changed my perspective regarding challenged individuals. Forrest is able to accomplish a number of things despite being intellectual and physically handicapped. Therefore, it is evident everyone can be successful despite their conditions.
There is effective use of archival footage with the assistance of techniques, for example, rotoscoping, chroma key, morphing, and image warping to integrate Hanks into it. The filmmaker uses sound effects to change the mouth movements in initiating new dialogue when recording voices of historical figures. There is use of graphics where there was explosion in the Vietnam War scene and the cast are digitally made to emerge in front of the explosion. There is the use of visual effects to develop a large crowd of persons at a peace rally at the Lincoln Memorial. Finally, there is the use of editing techniques, where Forrest’s legs are presumed to be amputated.
