At the day of birth, children have no knowledge about their surrounding environment. However, as they continue to grow, their minds develop to accommodate different type of information are retain knowledge. The first learning environment for a child is their home. It is at home that the child first interacts with family members and parents. He or she gains necessary communication and literacy skills through the repetitive interaction.
As a young child, I underwent the same process. I recall my parents teaching me how to pronounce certain words and speak accurately. Furthermore, I never knew the names of many things in daily life. Some of these things I came to learn them from others while for the most part, I learned them from parents and older siblings. When it came to writing, I started learning through toying around with pens that I would find lying around within the house. Most of the time I would scribble on any piece of paper available be it a magazine, course book, newspapers and much more. This behavior, however, put me at loggerheads with other family members. I would do writings on important documents and books.
When I joined school, matters took a more serious turn. I had to know the alphabet and memorize all the 26 letters. I also had to learn the correct spellings of words. My teachers began teaching me how to hold a pen correctly and write meaningful words. It was tough for me to write words and numbers correctly. This activity seemed to be like art that requires high skill and intelligence to master. As far as I can remember, it took me quite some time to know how to write eligible words but all in all; I eventually learned the art of reading and writing.
Over the years, I progressed towards the grades. Upon reaching eighth grade, I developed more interest in mathematics and sciences, especially physics. Though I never hated humanities, I was quite indifferent. On the side of languages, I felt they were mostly necessary for daily interactions and nothing much. When I reached high school, I majored in math/physics in my senior year. I had a lot of passion for these two subjects and was always the top in my class. The passion continued even at college where I enrolled for a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics.
Outside the classroom, I have always had an interest in computer software programming. During my days in high school and campus, I spent most of my free time trying my hand at basic programming. This activity made me conduct extensive research computer technology. Through the process, I was able to develop research skills. Furthermore, my interest in reading got aroused. I not only started reading about computers but novels. Through extensive reading, I expanded my knowledge in various areas of life.
In conclusion, I believe learning is a continuous process and a lifelong activity. On my part, I am happy with the progress I have made in my journey of literacy. I am now a more literate person, and my thirst for more knowledge continues to get stronger and stronger each day. However, I still have a lot to learn as I have not exhausted everything that is available. With my experience so far, I have a reason to believe that I will accomplish my entire objectives in life. Through the knowledge I have acquired, I am empowered towards success.
