All over the world, couples get married each single day. Families and friend come together with joy and expectation to witness them make the most important promises in their lives: loyalty and marriage vows. Loyalty always makes us think of such instances where we show unconditional love and affection to those around us. In essence, loyalty is more complex, much intense; it can either be positive or negative, and it is a virtue that we ought to show ourselves before showing it to others.
At its best, I would say loyalty implies caring for and supporting the people we love, even at the hardest moments. In my seventh grade, I got to experience the real meaning of loyalty from Peter, my best friend. Before joining my seventh grade, I was an adventurous, outgoing, and hardworking student, with many friends. However, this was only to last for a short while; immediately after joining the seventh grade, my parents divorced. I got depressed, stopped smiling, and started failing in my studies. As a result, majority of my friends turn their backs on me; they found me boring to hang around with. Nonetheless, Peter chose to stand by me; he cared about me unconditionally. It is his continued support, even at a time when I could not afford a smile which perfectly exemplified the true meaning of loyalty.
In contrast, it would be irrational to declare loyalty as a positive force. Many at times individuals tend to be loyal due to insecurity or fears; instead to showering love and care, it hurts other people. Looking back at various situations in antiquity, you would realize that a good number of people, more so leaders have been loyal to others out of fear. Many people have been forced to engage in malevolent acts such as corruption and robbery, out of loyalty towards others even though they clearly understood that they were acting inhumanely. As a result, millions of people have been hurt by the outcomes of the malevolent acts. This implies that even though loyalty often puts us in a caring position, fear-induced loyalty does more harm than good.
Occasionally, it is not utterly clear whether loyalty is positive or negative. For that reason, it is necessary to recall that loyalty should start with oneself; we ought to be loyal to ourselves before being loyal to others. It is only through loyalty one can really understand the good and bad values. In being loyal to oneself, an individual realizes the values which are of great significance to him, and thus leading a happy life. For instance, marriages will only succeed if couples are loyal to themselves. Even though, some pretend to be happy, forcing themselves to be loyal to their marriage, they always end up divorced since they were not loyal to themselves.
In conclusion, loyalty is obviously not as straightforward and happy as vowing to stay with one another through happy and sad moments of our lives. At the very best, it is extremely positive and may assist us to support and care for others as it was the case with Peter. However, at its worst, loyalty may bring more harm than good. It is imperative to apprehend that loyalty has both the positive and negative effects; in order to evaluate ourselves and our values critically whenever we are subjected to situations where our loyalty is questioned.
