Introduction
In the movie; “Making Relationships Work”, John Gottman outlines the fundamental techniques and approaches to make relationships work and build stable long-term relationships between couples by essentially striving to build a “Sound Relationship House”. Backed by long-term experience and thorough research, John presents what successful couples do and what the benefits of stable relationships.
I definitely learnt a lot from this particular presentation. First of all, I leant that it is possible for couples to strengthen their relationships using simple research based techniques or tools. There are various ways by which couples can build a “Sound Relationship House”. This can be achieved first of all by nurturing the friendship aspect in the relationship or marriage .This is because as Gottman points out in the movie, a positive perspective in the marriage can only be achieved if the friendship aspect is strong. Another way to build the “Sound Relationship House” is by dealing with the various relationship issues and learning how to amicably resolve and manage conflicts whenever they occur. Couples should also discover new ways of making each other’s dreams to be realized. Finally, couples should create a shared sense of meaning or purpose in their relationship.
Al this information is certainly very beneficial to me because am at a stage of life where relationships are starting to become serious. I therefore need all the advice I can get on this particular issue. I dream of getting married in the foreseeable future and since I would like to have a good marriage and a good relationship with my partner, Dr Goodman’s information will certainly come in handy. I believe that I follow all the instructions given by Goodman, I will be able to build the proposed ‘Sound Relationship House” that certainly seem beneficial in all aspects.
