According to Mary’s letter, there are several issues she raises. It is clear the intention of the letter is to seek an interpretation for a dream she had. The dream has issues of relationship based on religion, age of independence, and social class. The following is what is inferred from the letter.
Mary had read about dreams from the previous works of Professor Freud. Although she had read the works, she was unable to interpret the meaning of the dream she had. Mary had met a boyfriend yet she was not of age; she was too young to start dating according to her parents, and hence the parents on many occasions reprimanded her on such behaviors. Since she was the only child of the family, the parents paid all their attention on her. The religion of the boyfriend is in contradiction with that of Mary’s family. The boyfriend been an Italian and a catholic while Mary’s family been protestant put the two on a colliding lane. It is inferred that it is not only religion that was troubling Mary’s parents but also the social class. It is inferred that Mary’s family been an American one, felt superior to the Italian family of the boyfriend. Mary had a strong conviction that she wanted to marry a Catholic or a Jew. She and her boyfriend have had plenty of sex making the boy leave her initial girlfriend in favor of Mary.
Dreams do not create themselves at any given time. They are a recreation of ones experience in real life issues. The dream shows the contention existing in Mary’s life as well a possible course of events in the event that she is left by her boyfriend. Based on Mary’s dream, the brother of the Italian boyfriend was sent to deliver a message to her that his brother (Mary’s Italian boyfriend) had married someone else who name she could not recall. Fueled by the class issues raised by her mother, Mary could have in many occasions visualized the poverty levels of the Italian boyfriend. In this case, it is inferred that it is trues as described that the Italian boyfriend was not from a wealthy family as Mary’s family. When this situation occurred Mary’s dream indicated that she was isolated by her family especially her father and uncle who vanished just before she could read the letter. It is clear that Mary has unconditional love towards the Italian boyfriend. Four or five people who were to accompany the boyfriend’s brother would easily be inferred to be him, the boyfriend, her father, mother or the newly married married wife and uncle.
Mary out of frustration of such information of been left, she decided to commit suicide using a knife that was in her vicinity. She describes the excruciating pain she felt as she drove it into her chest. Such pain and crying is indication the possible pain she would feel in the event of been left and consequently committing suicide. The emotions that disturbed her such that she could not concentrate in her work also show the intense love she had towards her boyfriend.
The interpretation of the dream would be quite challenging without the knowledge of the person married to Mary’s boyfriend. However, it could be inferred that he whole dream is as a result of the collision of ideas and opinions concerning Mary’s involvement with the Italian boy. Therefore, the dream may indicate the events that may take place in the near future should Mary be left by the Italian boyfriend.
