Advertising is one of the most potential messengers in a culture which can be extremely toxic for the self-esteem of the young women. Young women attempt to bring out the sense out of their contradictory expectations in a culture which is subjugated by advertising. In fact focusing only on advertising images, a bleak world would be created for the women. Young women are desirable to advertisers since they are new consumers who are beginning to earn a substantial disposable income, and are building a brand loyalty which might last for an entire lifetime. Research studies have it that teenage girls spend more than four billion yearly just on cosmetics.
For example, Seventeen, a magazine which focuses on teenage girls aged between twelve and fifteen. This magazine sells these girls under an advert with the words “she the one you want” and she is the one we have got”. The advert continues saying, “she pursues fashion and beauty at every turn, it is more than a magazine, and it is her life”. On a similar note, the magazine has another advert in which it refers itself as the girl’s Bible. Irrespective of the intention of the advertisers, these teenage girls get a different message.
They get the message that their relevance lies within their clothing, perfume, beauty and bodies. This goes further to the point that they get an assurance that they can achieve what is idealized to be beauty. As a result, majority of them, spend much energy and time to attain this trivial and unattainable image of beauty. These glossy images of ideal beautiful and slender women which are witnessed would not possess such an impact as it does if the culture we live in, would not be encouraging us to believe that we are able to remake our bodies into ideal assets of beauty.
