Rene Descartes had various meditations on issues that becomes the basis of various philosophies. The meditation 1 is entitled what can be called into doubt , which opens with mediator reflecting on falsehoods that he has believed in life as well as the faultiness of body of knowledge. As a matter of fact, the mediation 1 is a clear indication of how things through individuals common sense is always open to doubt. In the meditation, Descartes uses various arguments to demonstrate the peoples knowledge on doubt. The arguments include the deceiving God argument, the dream argument, as well as the evil demon argument. In the entire arguments it is evident that people do not perceive directly the external objects. Individuals perceive the external objects based on the contents of the mind, and the images that is produced by the external objects.
The mediator in the first meditation believes that everything that seems to be most true has come to realize through the senses. Nevertheless, the mediator admits that in some occasions the senses can be deceiving, especially when it comes to the objects that are far or too small. In fact, to the best of the mediator's knowledge, insane people are in a position to be deceived more, but because he was not insane the issue of insane people was of less concern to him.
The argument of the dream is one that the mediator uses to elaborate on the issue of doubt. The mediator asserts that through dreaming he is convinced that he is realizing real objects. The mediator dreams of being awake and sitting in the fireplace, and he is fully convinced by it because he often reflects of dreaming of the same thing. It is asserted that the dream images can perhaps be drawn from various waking experience. For example, even the painter when creating an imagery creature, the composite parts of a creature are from a known creature. In conclusion of his dream, the mediator asserts that he can doubt the composite things, but he will never doubt the universal and simple parts from which the image is made of such as time, size, color, as well as shapes.
In addition, a further reflection by the mediators shows that one can still doubt simple things. Perhaps, the omnipresent God can make various conceptions in mathematics false. Individuals may believe that God is good and will not lead to believing false on things. Based on the same reasoning it could be concluded that God will not deceive an individual on anything, this is not actually true. The essence that God does not exist leads to a more imperfect scenario, where individuals are more deceived.
In the Meditation process, the mediator finds it not possible to keep habitual assumptions and opinions out of his mind. In fact, he decides to take the imagery and opinions to be false. The trend of doubting almost everything is helpful in ensuring that an individual is not misled by the demon. According to Descartes, the meditations are crucial in providing the useful metaphysics. The Meditation was aimed at overturning the western tradition of Aristotle. The First Meditation is an effort to cut short Aristotelians from customary opinions, and allows different interpretation.
