Impact of Social Media on Adolescents
Interpersonal Development
Abstract
Over the past years, social media has become the primary way of communication and information-sharing. This study aims to explore the impact of social media use on teenagers’ interpersonal development. With the changes that occur in the society, this research aims to identify the ways in which social media has affected peer affiliation, quality of friendships and development of social identity. There are still gray areas and questions that need to be addressed about the benefits of social media on the interpersonal development of teenagers. With opportunities, come different challenges regarding the use of social media in the everyday lives of teenagers like cyberbullying, privacy issues, relationships of parent and child, addiction to the internet and impact of social media on sleep and performance in school. Through related literature, the mechanisms on which social media shape the different aspects of the life of teenagers will be addressed in this research paper.
