Technology has changed every aspect of human life. It has changed the way how people communicate with their family and friends. The process of growth in technology and communication have been observed in a parallel way and technological inventions like internet, mobile phones, social media has helped the communication in entering into the next level. This paper intends to discuss the way how technology has influenced the way of communication in modern times.
It is not that difficult to assess the importance of technology in the communication sector and the scene were completely different only twenty or thirty years ago. People used to meet face to face for communicating with each other. Telephones were used for emergency calls and telegrams were commonly used by the people. Today these are things of the past and people have left these mediums behind (Turkle, 2012). Youngsters cannot even imagine how people used to live without internet and cell phones.
After the advent of the internet, cell phones and several other technological devices, the way of communication is completely changed. Today, people have internet that provides them access to the whole world for a user in less than a second. Internet is the most convenient and effective medium to receive as well as send any material into any parts of the world. E-Mails are used in order to communicate instead of telegrams and these mails can be sent to any place of the world within seconds (Turkle, 2012).
After the arrival of internet, next was the arrival of social networking sites like Facebook, twitter and mobile applications like Whats app. These devices took us into a new zone where people communicate to each other in a convenient and effective manner. Today people do not feel loneliness because of these mediums of communication. Everybody stays in constant touch with friends and family with the help of these communication mediums (Turkle, 2012). Technology has caused Solitude among the youngsters because they excessively rely on these modern mediums of communication.
Modern communication technology has given people the option of being solitude. They can utilise their time according to them. being solitude becomes important sometimes, and modern technology has made it possible for users. Solitude allows an individual to do something remarkable in is life. On the other hand, one aspect of this modernisation of communication technology is the loneliness among people. Today people prefer to remain busy with these modern communication mediums and they do not get time to socialize with their friends regularly (Turkle, 2012)
It has been observed that excessive use of communication mediums makes people isolated and insecure in some cases. Such cases take place when people start relying on these communication devices excessively. People become so involved in these technological devices that they create some kind of space of their own where nobody else is there to accompany them. Such cases are injurious, and people become insecure when they face real life. Technology should be used for making life convenient, and it should not be allowed to domiate one’s life in any case. Technology has affected the way of communication in a significant way, and a lot depends on how people use the same.
People are so habituated of using these communication mediums that they cannot even imagine sustaining without using these mediums. Kids are used to play video games, and they prefer these games over physical activities. People are habituated of using social networking sites, mobile applications, and it is not possible for them to stay away from these sites for even a day. Communication is probably one of most significant part of modern life as it affects every aspect of today’s life (Turkle, 2012).
It has been observed that people do not feel comfortable when they are not in possession of these communication devices. Today, people cannot imagine leaving their place without having their cell phones, tablets or other communication devices that they use for communicating. It has been observed that technology has helped people in several instances. Girls find cell phones as their best friends, and they can easily get the help of police in case of need (Turkle, 2012). Cell phones and internet empower people by providing them relevant information. Information is one of the strongest medium that empowers people and lets them decide what is wrong and what they should do.
I have also observed that I cannot afford to live without my cell phone and cannot live without any internet connection. The communication devices keep me connected with the world by providing the latest information. I prefer to stay in touch of internet for the latest news and stock movements. Staying online enables me to stay in touch with my friends who keep updating me about various movements of my college and also provide latest relevant information. The internet connection in my tablet is one of most essential requirements of my daily life. Social networking sites, as well as mobile applications, are essential part of my life that empowers me in several ways.
