Movie Review
The movie industry is very rich and has virtually been taken up the world over. Different countries, continents and cultures have a stake in what can be called their contribution to this entertainment arena and one of them is the Indian movie industry. There are several interesting movies from this part of the world and one most outstanding movie from the Indian Peninsula is “Sangam.” In it, culture is portrayed as a determinant of a person’s destiny if one does not rise up to the occasion to fight the said suppressing culture.
The movie is a clear indication of how people deemed to be of the lower social class are defined and how they are destined to lead miserable lives. But the determination of the main character, Sunder Khanna rises against all odds to do everything in his powers to get out of his poor environment to get married to Radha, a daughter of a rich man. In my opinion, some cultures such as this can sometimes hinder a person from achieving their full potential if people stick to them without really wanting to change the destiny that fate and culture impose on society.
The film brings out the typical caste system that is common in India. People from different caste systems are not allowed by culture and tradition to mingle freely. Their fate is even decided before one is born but Sunder goes ahead to prove to society that he can rise up to the occasion and change his destiny and fate. This he does by enrolling in the army in an effort to become rich and have a profession so as to marry the daughter of an army captain.
