The movie entitled Einstein’s Big Idea, produced by the PBS series Nova analyzes the implications of the theory of relativity, which came to a conclusion that mass and energy are the same thing, related by the formula E=mc2 . The two- hour program traces the 300 years of key developments culminating to Einstein’s revolutionary formula, featuring an easy to understand flow chart of the core concepts, and portraits of main participants. Starting from Michael Faraday to Einstein, Big Idea demonstrates systematically how these visionaries, piece by piece came up with a new theory about how the universe operates.
Adapted from a book by David Bodanis, e=mc2, Big Idea opens out in chapters. The movie starts with Faraday, the first person to describe electromagnetic forces, to the Emile du Chatelet who came up with the idea of the “squared” part of Einstein’s equation. The movie also includes Lise Meitner, who came up with a means to split the atom, 33 years after Einstein’s equation. Einstein is described in the movie as “young, energetic, even sexy,” entertaining his girlfriends, and most of the time starring off into space. This is supposed to indicate that he is construction new ideas in his brain. Big Idea presents the subject such that a layperson can understand. It explains the previous research that served as the foundation for Einstein’s formula.
However, the movie has some parts that are hard to understand, while some painful to watch. For example, in the chapter focusing on Lavoisier, the actors speak in French accents that are hard to understand and a ghostly character returning to his lab after being killed. Big Idea provides a provocative and effective means of understanding the most basic natural process in the universe.
