Requiem for a Dream (2000)
Requiem for a Dream (2000) directed by Darren Aronofsky is a significant example of director’s skillful and subtle work. Due to the various techniques this film is not only visually beautiful but also magnificently tells story. Techniques that are used in this film are:
Accelerated montage can be observed at the beginning of the film when Harry (Jared Leto) and Tyrone (Marlon Wayans) roll TV to the pawn-broker (0:04:56 – 00:05:00). The other example of this technique can be found in scene when Harry, Tyrone and Marion (Jennifer Connelly) have a party (00:15:39).
Deep focus can be seen in scene where Harry and Tyrone have a small talk with the pawn-broker (00:05:36) and the other example is in scene where Harry imagines teasing a police officer (00:07:31).
Jump cuts are used in scene where Harry`s mother looks through the book of diet (00:14:24) and in scene where she experiences effect from her pills (00:32:34).
Tracking shot is evident in scene where Harry`s mother, escorted by women, carries envelope to the post box (00:23:07). Moreover, one may observe tracking shot (00:33:17) in Tyrone`s flashback scene where he thinks about his mother (00:33:17-00:33:39).
The low angle shot can be seen when Harry`s mother sits at the table suffering from hunger (00:19:51) and when she talks with her friends (00:37:46).
The crosscutting is evident in scenes when Harry and Tyrone are planning to buy new dope and at the same time Harry`s mother is filling application for the contest (00:23:01) which indicates that their dreams are beginning to come true. Moreover, the other example of crosscutting can be seen when Harry and Marion are sitting silently on the couch while Tyrone thinks about his mother and at the same time Harry`s mother completely losses her mind (01:02:07).
High angle shot is used in scenes when Harry and Tyrone listen to music (00:05:56) and when Marion looks up at the building (00:09:11).
Close ups are evident in scene where Harry`s mother get a call from television (00:10:32) and when Marion offers to “waist some time” (0015:33).
The fade out can be seen in scene when Harry and Marion talk about opening a shop (00:18:58) and when Marion looks in the mirror (00:20:26).
The fade inn one may observe in scene with box full of money and Harry`s mother reading a receipt (00:31:32) and the other example is in in scene where Tyrone opens and closes doors (00:33:13).
Dissolve is evident in scene where Harry sees Marion at the beach (00:24:06) and in scene where Marion has sex with her ex (00:59:52).
The pan can be seen in scene of drug selling (01:04:07) and in scene where truck with drug dealers drives away (01:04:52).
The tilt can be seen in scenes with Harry`s mother: first when she is watching TV (00:50:18) and later when she is paranoid (01:06:29).
The wipe can be seen in scenes at the beginning of the film (00:03:01) and in scenes indicating time of the year like (00:47:53).
Example of matte shot can be seen in scene when Tyrone is in jail (00:50:31) and in scene when Harry`s mother visits doctor (00:53:15).
