Retaining moral values and ethics that one learns from family at home is what Indian Film Industry showcases through most of its movies. The values may be directly or indirectly forecasted imbibed in the story. Based on the same concept, on October 20th 1995, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, the English version of which is “The Big Hearted will take away the Bride” was released.
Directed by Aditya Chopra and Produced by Yash chopra, the movie highlights the true love story of an Indian Young couple. The couple meets on a vacation in Europe and fall in love with each other. By the time the girl realizes that she’s in love, she reaches her hometown in London where she finds her father totally against love marriages. The father then decides to go to India and marry his daughter (kajol) to a boy of his choice. It is then that the true lover (Shahrukh Khan) flies to India to convince the girl’s family so that he can marry her (Kajol) in the end.
The concept of retaining Indian values comes from the part when the girl asks her lover to run away secretly with her as she knows nobody would understand their love at home. The boy then explains her that if he wanted, he would have done this much earlier and there wasn’t any need to spend so much time with the family trying to convince them. He was patient enough to undergo the worst outcomes too. In the end, the boy’s will won over the girl’s parents and after realizing the true love and respect in the boy’s eyes, the girl’s father himself asked her daughter to go and marry him. Besides being born and brought up in London, the boy did not let his family values and moral ethics fade away with time and this is what led him achieve his goal in the end.
On a similar note, Bollywood’s well known director Subhash Ghai released “Pardes” on August 8th, 1997. The movie was a musical and commercial hit. The English meaning of “Pardes” is Foreign Land and the story revolves around a true love story of a young couple. The girl (Mahima Chaudary) stays in an Indian village with her family. Due to an old friendship between her father and a rich business man from Los Angeles, America, she gets chosen as a bride for his son. The simplicity and innocence of the girl is what attracts Amrish Puri (rich business man) the most and he finds the girl best suited for his son Apoorva Agnihotri.
According to a secret plan of Amrish Puri (the rich business man), Shahrukh Khan, a close friend of Apoorva agnihotri visits India first to make certain arrangements as per the liking of his friend Apoorva agnihotri. As a consequence, Shahrukh gets a lot of time to spend with the girl (mahima) and her family and becomes a close friend of theirs.
Eventually, he succeeds in convincing both Mahima and Apoorva to meet each other for wedding talks. They finally get formally engaged in India. Post engagement, the girl flies to America with her new family and gets introduced to a new face of Apoorva agnihotri and blames Shahrukh for lying to her. She finds Apoorva almost opposite of what image Shahrukh had portrayed in front of her before engagement.
It’s then that Shahrukh realizes that he has fallen in love with the girl (mahima). When the girl realizes, that her father chose a wrong guy for her, she ran away leaving Apoorva drinking and partying with his friends in a party. Since Apoorva also tried to rape her, she knocks him unconscious and runs away from there.
When shahrukh finds the girl missing, he looks for her everywhere and finally meets her in a stripped condition at a railway station. He then promises her to help her fly back to India to her family. Mahima also realizes that shahrukh wasn’t just a true friend to her but a true lover as well. The girl reveals the truth to her family and the family realizes their mistake and decide to unite Mahima and Shahrukh and they live a happy married life ahead.
Here again, while Apoorva and shahrukh both are Indians by birth, Shahrukh retains his family values and ethics till the end and both the families understand the innocence and true love of the couple.
