On Thursday, April 28, 2016, at 7.30 in the evening, I attended the Eighty Fourth Concert of the University Chorale and the USA Concert Choir at the University of South Alabama’s Laidlaw Performing Arts Center Recital Hall. The Concert was dubbed “Star Light, Star Bright” and was organized by the University’s Department of Music. The event featured Laura M. Moore as the main conductor, Elizabeth Bemis and Tracy Mank as the student conductors, Jasmin Arakawa and Robert Holm as the main pianists, and Jennifer Bemis as the accompanist.
The major pieces of the night included “A Rose Touched by the Sun’s Warm Rays” by Jean Berger (1909-2002), “Ballade to the Moon” by Daniel Elder (b. 1986), “O Lux Beatissima” by Howard Hervey (b. 1968), “The Cloths of Heaven” by Z. Randall Stroope (b. 1953), “Tant que Vivray” by Claudin de Sermisy (1490-1562), “Fyer! Fyer!” by Thomas Morley (1505-1585), “If Ye Love Me” by Thomas Tallis (1505-1585), “Fulfillment” by Dwilight Bigler (b. 1973), “Sure on This Shining Night” by Morten Lauridsen (b. 1943). The performances consisted of two pieces from two groups: the University of South Alabama’s Chorale and the USA Concert Choir. The finale of the concert was a piece by the University’s Chorale by Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827). Jasmin Arakawa was performed a solo performance with a piano and she was seconded by Robert Holm. The pieces performances at the concert were simply superb.
This paper is a report of what took place at the concert, the types of the music performed, and most importantly how were the pieces performance. The effects of the performances will also be analyzed with the general conclusions of the concert.
