My Little Pony is a story as told by Christine Alvarado. It depicts the journey walked by a small girl. This journey saw her develop a system of braiding that turned out mathematical, something that made her love mathematics in the long run. She learned mathematical concepts that lay a strong foundation in her, and it is all thanks to these concepts that she devised her ways of playing with the numbers that aided her learn subdivisions and recursion. This exercise split over to everything including while on the dinner table while eating her cauliflower. She never gave up, and that is how she ended up liking mathematics.
What I found interesting in the story is the fact that she turned her passion for ponies and simple games into a mathematical venture. Her discovery led her to understanding simple concepts, and it is these concepts that helped her grow from the making of one braid to several of them. What is fascinating is the way in which the subdivisions led to the formation of very many small strands and braids and then boil down to one big braid.
If this is turned into a real life classroom activity, it will not only be an interesting pass time but also a learning experience. A classroom can make room for this exploration by introducing the concept in another way, away from the pony and use different materials. The exercise can be used as a game in order to trigger the imagination as well as making learners become interested in the activity. It is through such activity that those learners who seem disinterested or those who find the division and a recursion concept easier to handle and understand.
