Technology definition
Network security is a component of computer and system security that entails the adoption of policies and guidelines that are aimed at preventing and monitoring the unauthorized access, modification, misuse and denial of computer network service and network accessible resources. It involves authorization of access to data in a network, this is controlled by use of user identification and use of passwords .
This technology covers a variety of networks both public and private spread through various organizations, institutions, enterprises, governments among other application areas. The most common applications and simple way of protecting a network resource is by assigning authorization codes to the frequent users of the resource. This can also be achieved through validation of users and giving different levels of access to the resource to different kinds of users.
Business applications
The technology is gaining use in almost each enterprise, organization and institutions. Networks are effectively used and heavily relied upon in banks for transactions. Given the nature of the transaction in a bank the data must be kept private and confidential thus network security is imperative. Network security enhances security of transactions and processes carried out in the bank by both customers and employees. ATM withdrawals are secured by use or security codes accompanied by corresponding personal identification digits to prevent unauthorized access. Additionally, different level of authorization and access are set by the network administrator to control the use of bank information systems and data access by the bank employees.
Business/ society implication
The use of the technology enhances confidentiality, authentication and integrity of data and information in the bank. Additionally, it reduces the unauthorized access to information through hacking, tapping and eavesdropping. Network security also improves service delivery in the banks and minimizes chances of service interruption from external interference caused by unauthorized access to data or information. With effective network security, customer satisfaction and confidence is enhanced in the banking industry, thus improving business performance.
