Building connections and networking are important skills in marketing and sales (Bidsketch, 2013). The internet provides an opportunity to establish these connections. Today marketing and sales are conducted globally so as to reach everyone. The internet has made this possible through use of viral marketing (Kalpaklioglu & Toros, 2014). The consumer behavior is very dynamic and networking gives the marketers an opportunity to learn their customers and provide them with what they require. The global market has challenges that are political, economical, social and technological. Building connections and networking, therefore, provides an opportunity for the marketers to understand and update the customer needs regularly. Networking should involve establishing relationships that are going to last (Entrepreneur, 2003). Building connections and networking are important because they create a relationship between two people, and this leads to success (Strategic Business Network, 2014).
Question 5
It is important to use proper techniques when approaching business people. Some of the effective techniques include face-to-face interactions; via phone; participating in networking websites; and via emails. The choice of the technique to use will depend on whether it is a social gathering or there is a lot of distance between the people who are networking.
A business mixer is an event that provides an opportunity for the members to meet up and interact with each other. If I was to attend a networking event such as the Victoria Chamber of Commerce, I would first plan on what I want to achieve from that event. I would then approach the business people and network with them on a face-to-face basis. I would focus on building a relationship with the people that I see can bring value to me. Interactions will be based on what direction I want my business to take. There will be plenty of people with different areas of expertise; therefore, I will have to identify the expertise that I need to gain value.
