The day turns to night, and the night turns to day; but it wasn’t always so. It used to be that the days were just that, days. The sun would shine down on the mountains and the green grass, throughout the calendar year. However, people grew weary and tiresome working all day, and prayed to the gods for a few hours of darkness, where they could rest their eyes and their sore muscles from the days work in the fields.
Our story begins with a beautiful young woman named Pangita who was the daughter of a god and a mortal; her father was the god of the moon, Ziggy, and her mother Poliona, a mere mortal. One day Pangita was plowing the fields when she decided to lie down in the fields to get some respite from the heat that the sun was bearing down on her. She lay down under the shade of a beautiful oak tree, and went into a deep sleep, a deeper then any sleep she had before. This was her father doing; the tree had a curse on it so that anyone that lay underneath it would fall asleep. While sleeping a winged horse came down from the heavens and grabbed her. When Pangita finally woke up she was flying, and considering she was not born without any godly power, she did not understand what was going on. The winged horse had no man guiding it through the sky; it was as if it knew where to go on its own. They climbed higher and higher and Pangita was starting to panic that she did not know where she was going. Finally they reached the top of Mount Psyfreud, and the winged horse turned into Netenyoohoo the god of the mountains. Mount Psyfreud was not like any other mountain on this earth, it was the tallest peak and nearly reached the moon, it was impenetrable and could only be reached by the assistance of a god or his messangers.
Pangita’s mother did not see the winged creature grab her daughter, but knew something was terribly wrong when she did not come back by nightfall. She searched high and low for Pangita, at the top of every mountain that she could climb, and through the depths of the valleys. As depression overcame her because of the disappearance of her daughter, she forgot about her duties to plow the fields and harvest the vegetation. As the surrounding vegetation, trees, and animals started to die off from not being taken care of, she felt her own hopes of ever finding her daughter also begin to die and whither away.
At the top of the mountain, in the coldness, Netenyohoo professed his love for Pangita. He explained to her how the tree was a distraction that her father, Ziggy, had created so Netenyoohoo could find her. He told her of his wishes for her to be his wife. Pangita wanted nothing to do with Netenyoohoo, she wanted to go back to her mother, to the land which was full of lush green trees and beautiful flowers, and her animal friends. However, the fact that the mountain was so close to the moon meant that there was darkness, and she could rest her weary eyes, and for this she was grateful, and agreed to stay at least until she was well rested.
As the days and weeks passed, Poliona continued to yearn and search for Pangita; the days seemed to melt together. Wandering around for days and drained of energy from the lack of sleep and the lack of sustenance, Poliona lay down in an open field, where she let her exhaustion overcome her. The beams of the sun caused Poliona to become delirious and she soon fainted in the open field, without any hope of finding her daughter she almost wanted to die, but because she did not know what happened to her daughter she could not let the darkness overcome her, but it was almost against her will. Soon after, three village women found Poliona and gave her water and food, and offered to take her back to their home so she may rest in the darkness. With Poliona well rested and fed she almost forgot about her sadness over the loss of her daughter, but soon reality hit her in the face; and she decided that it was time to continue on her journey to find her daughter.
Deciding that it was time to get the gods involved, she reached out to the father of her child and requested to seek a meeting with her husband. Standing in front of Ziggy and his council, Poliona demanded that Ziggy find Pangita, and that it did not matter how many stones he had to overturn in this vast world to find any sign of her daughter. As time passed, Poliona grew weary and angry believing that Ziggy had something to do with her daughter’s disappearance; growing ever more frustrated Poliona promised to wreck great havoc on this earth if Ziggy did not produce Pangita immediately, and with that Ziggy requested one of his messengers retrieve her from wherever she was being hidden.
Ziggy’s messenger ascended Mount Psyfreud, the heat was almost unbearable and he almost wished that he would fall off the edge of the mountain, but knew that Ziggy being god, would just bring him back to life and would give some sort of punishment that would be worse then death itself. As the messenger climbed higher and higher the suns’ beams seemed to become faint and there was darkness, something he wasn’t used to. When he finally reached the top of Mount Psyfreud, he found Pangita more beautiful then he can remember and he thought to himself that the darkness must be good for a person’s soul, because she just exhumed this radiance and glow about her even in the darkness. When the messenger instructed her of her father’s wishes and explained her mother’s heartache; Pangita became confused and emotionally torn, as she desperately wanted to see her mother, , but was now goddess of the mountains and loved and respected her position as Netenyoohoo’s wife.
Hoping to ease his wife’s distress, Netenyohoo came to her side and sweetly comforted her. He told her that while he loved her greatly and would overturn e very mountaintop if she disappeared from him, her mother was equally as distraught and her duties as a daughter were equal to her duties as a wife. With that, she followed her father’s messenger back down Mount Psyfreud, away from the darkness and back into the sun, where she suddenly felt the heat upon her face, something she missed dearly, but also exhausted her more easily then she could remember.
Poliona rejoiced with the sight of her daughter, and did not want to ever have her leave her embrace ever again. However, Poliona remembered a decree made by Ziggy, for Pangita to return to the life she knew she must be as pure as the day she had left. Ziggy, felt love for his daughter and was ashamed for what he had done, so he decided that during the day which would be decided by seeing the moon in the sky, Poliona could spend time with her mother on earth, but when the moon was visible in the sky she would return to Netenyoohoo, until the following day. When she would return her mother would be sad, but instead of having depression overcome her, Ziggy decided that not only would Pangita get the gift of darkness and rest, but all of earth would, so that they may forgot at least for a time being the troubles and sadness that envelopes them throughout the day. However, Pangita does not prefer one over the other, she cherishes the time she has with her mother and father, as well as the time she has with her husband and sleeping
