Room painting is the easiest and best way to give homes a great new look. It however, becomes very difficult to do regular paint work because it is an expensive affair. This brings the need for people to learn how to paint their houses as this reduces the cost of the process on top of being an interesting and involving activity. Wall painting can be done by any person as long as they understand and have the instruments and equipment required. People can be innovative and adventurous in the way they paint their walls in terms of color patterns and schemes as well as their choice of paint. This includes the use of oil based or water based paints. The greatest nightmare that comes with painting is the splattering of paint on all surfaces in the house such as furniture, appliances and the floor. This is an instruction paper that ensures that the painting process only leaves clean and attractive surface with no splattered paint.
- The first and most important step is to identify the wall that needs to be painted. This helps in determining the type of paint and equipment to be used as well as the shades and color schemes. For instance, high humidity areas like the bathroom and the kitchen requires high gross paint while the other areas with relatively low humidity requires less gross paint. Understanding the right tools to use in painting is also important because it determines the attractiveness of the surface after painting. The tools required include brushes and roller covers and having all of them at your disposal before starting the painting process is important. A painter should select a good brush that keeps its shape, hold paint well and that do not shed.
- Prepare the room whose walls need to be painted. This is done by clearing everything in the room or placing them at the center of the house to give way for easier movement along the walls. It is important to cover everything in the room including the floor to prevent the paint from spattering on the surfaces. The covering is done using a painter’s plastic that is bought from hardware shops and could be used more than one time. Covering of the floor and other surfaces that are not being painted ensures that cleaning after painting that could lead to smearing of the paint is not required and therefore saves a lot of time.
The next step is filling which is basically covering the cracks and holes on the wall using sand and joint compound.
- Before painting, the paint should be mixed well and compounds like latex and oil added in the mixture to improve consistency. This makes the paint smooth and easy to spread. Small portions of the paint can be mixed separately to determine the result and the color scheme required. The creativity of the painter in terms of mixing colors is required at this point. Color charts could be used but the best way of ensuring great results is doing it practically. The walls should be cleaned and dusted before painting because applying paint on dirty walls makes them dull. This can however, be done even a day or two before painting. Painting should not be done on wet surfaces because this affects the results based on the nature of the paint.
- Painting should start by applying a thin coat of paint on all the surfaces evenly. The best way to go about it is to start with the ceiling followed by the vertical walls. This makes the painting process flow smoothly and therefore making issues of different patterns on the walls that are brought by dry coats less. Painting the walls should be done continuously to avoid leaving marks on the wall. The technique of holding the painting brush also plays a significant role in reducing the paint marks on the wall. The painter should ensure that he does not push the brush back and forth because this will reduce the attractiveness of the wall by creating marks.
- The brushes and other equipment used for painting should be thoroughly cleaned and properly stored for future use. Storing brushes without cleaning renders them unusable. The equipment that are damaged and worn out should be disposed accordingly.
It is important to take precaution when painting and handling paint products because the compounds used in manufacturing them sometimes contain traces of heavy metals such as lead which could be hazardous. The paints and the oils used in mixing and cleaning equipment after the process are also highly flammable and therefore extra caution should be taken when handling all these substances to avoid endangering the life of the user. The person painting should ensure that the room being painted is well aerated by opening all the windows and doors. This should continue until the paint dries completely.
After the paint is dry and the smell of wet paint reduces, the room can now be arranged and what had been removed taken back in preparation for occupation. The process of painting is the same for all types of walls and what differs is the type of paint required as a result of the use of the room as well as personal preferences.
