The book, city of heroes is a fine, mind capturing, nonfiction count of the past events at Charleston city, South Carolina. Graced with a video game to match its exciting nature, the writer illustrates how Charleston bore the brunt of the massively destructive effects of the earthquake of 1886.
Led by the then Mayor, William A. Courtenay, residents of the city engineered a touching process of rebuilding of the city and taking care of the victims. The federal government and the state refused to support them in rebuilding. They were almost desperate. The fallen city was on the verge of disappearing from the map. Then with utmost love for their city, people came together. They organized fundraisers and invited people from the northern states, all of them private. They worked themselves off to ensure that Charleston could regain its former glory even if only mildly. In eighteen months they had achieved visible levels of reconstruction. Their beloved Charleston began to take shape.
The writer recounts the events after the earthquake in a vivid manner, including the search for ground zero that ensued soon after the earthquake. The Charlestonians were too broke to rebuild everything. So they used Earthquake bolts to hold together whatever forms of repairs they had attained. Numerous historic buildings in the city attest to the works of the Charlestonians of those days, to this day.
The book provides a rich display of arranged portraits of the heroes of that pioneered the repair work. Cote provides a detailed account all the events that followed including how the U.S Geology experts came to conduct their survey in order to rate the earthquake. Scientists visited the city for research. They were stunned by the amount of historic buildings that were retained including the earthquake bolts. The city’s splendor and riches in tourist attractions is not forgotten. It’s no wonder the city boasts of a large annual turnover of tourists. Cote goes on to add the findings of the scientists’ calculations. Could it happen again or was it just a one-time disaster. This question can only be answered after one reads the whole book, cover to cover.
