When comes to how men dressed, it is easily divided into three categories: work, casual, summer. As simply as these labels are, a lot goes into them. Although we can certainly mix and match these garments, when looking at them separately, certain similarities arise. For instance, work clothes do not have the same responsibilities as the causal counterparts. But both wardrobes adjust for the better during a certain time of the year.
In today’s world, the brick-and-mortar offices of a corporate environment certify work-clothes as a means of presentation. For men, work-clothes are the esteemed three-piece suits, the tailored jacket, the appropriate tie, and the shined shoe. These are not clothes for activity; they are for remaining still and reserved. For men, work-clothes are very much about appealing to a uniform look. This allows less distraction in the environment, but it also denies radical movements in the wearer.
Clothes of a casual nature are, in their essence, a one-size-fits-all bin. Casual-clothes are the mass-marketing of non-personal, generic cuts of cloth. The epitomes of this idea are jeans, sneakers, and t-shirts, which at one time in history were legitimate working-men clothes. Now, given their wide-availability, men, women, and children can wear them without purpose. These items are well-used for sitting around the house, browsing the supermarket, and possibly to a business-casual interview.
When noticing work-clothes and casual-clothes, they are best presented during the summer. It’s when everyone has shed their winter coats and wants to look as attractive as possible. From this comes “summer clothes”. Summer-clothes often include cotton fabrics to allow circulation and free movement, accent pieces or decorations for conversation starters, and vibrant color to express enthusiasm for the season. Summer clothes are an emphasis on the aesthetics that we wear and showcase them before winter covers them up again.
Fortunately, many of us are not this rigid about what we wear. Clothes are not so much are an extension of our personality. Some us wear bright colors and shine shoes all year long; a lot of us may never own a tie, let alone wear one to work; and I’ve seen men bowl in button-downs and pants. There are even people who don’t have clothes inspired by the summer never mind having separate clothes for it. Beyond these labels, I think clothes are how we wear them and that is the best way to classify it.
