The mechanism used by the United States to curb matters pertaining to international relations has raised questions with some individuals referring to it as the world police. U.S after the civil war that occurred and destabilized some of its important pillars such as the economy resorted to maintenance of order in every occasion thus contributing to their dominance in international relations (Hook&Spanier, 2013). Every ethnicity, religion, country of its capability has the mechanism that it can use to quell violence suppose such circumstances arise. Because of its ability to suppress violence and reinstate order in most countries in the world, United States is the policemen of the world.
The international events in the past five years that could be traced back to the foreign policy created during the civil war are the involvement of the United States in Russian-Ukraine crunch which it decided to put sanctions against Russia. The European union and the united states had reached “crunch time” in order to hold more instability in Ukraine then hinder any more expansion of Russia in that region. Another event was engaging in the opposition party in Syria in 2006, as a way of ensuring democracy in the country (Smyth, 2012). The United States supported the people of Syria as they struggled for justice, a unified and inclusive Syria. Bashar al-Assad’s rule brutally inhibited what started as a nonviolent opposition movement in March 2011 in Dar’a. Assad proved that with his cruel and oppressive strategies he lost all validity. His constant tenancy only increased inflamed tensions and radicalism over the region. Engaging in the Iraqi war in 2006 (Cantrell&Brickery 2009). Rendering to Failed States Index that was created by a magazine known as foreign policy and the supply for peace, among the five most unstable states Iraq was one of them. From the year 2005-2008. A top U.S international poll that analysts conducted in 2007 revealed that in 10 year to come only 3% of analysts hoped that the United States would be capable of rebuilding Iraq to a democratic state and 58% hoped that Sunni-Shiite pressures would radically grow in the Middle East.
The aspects that led to us being a super policeman to the world was because of the industrial revolution, the role they played during the first and Second World War and due to the Mahan’s strategy. Industrial revolution in the United States in 1820-1870 was fundamental for the development of their economy. Industrial revolution means to change from home and hand manufacturing to factory and machine. The first revolution was fundamental for inventing weaving and spinning machines that operated using power from water that was later changed to steam. It assisted in the growth of America’s economy. Nevertheless, the American economy and society was significantly transformed by the industrial revolution in an up-to-date urban-industrial country. The American industrialization involved three crucial developments. Firstly, there was an expansion of the transport industry, then improvements on electricity were successfully harnessed. Lastly, industrial processes were improved hence increasing production and the purifying process. The government assisted the American manufacturers by placing tariffs that protected them.
Regardless of the warnings of the war, United States was not fully organized especially when the Second World War broke out. The countries’ tool companies and the country’s machine were all cleaned out during the depression. Sadly their military were in shortage of supplies as several soldiers were drilling with wooden tanks and toy guns. Nevertheless, this depression emerged to be a good groundwork for that which was forthcoming. Americans had known how to economize and persist. Since they had been forced into a war, they were ready to indulge. Over fifteen million Americans ended up joining the army. Supplying and training them was an astounding challenge. Over six thousand people provide equipment, medical services and food to the eight thousand soldiers. Furthermore, several raw materials like oil, manila fiber and rubber had a shortage. However, president franklin Roosevelt was a good leader but not a proper officer. Still, Americans jetted into the occasion. When President Roosevelt ordered for the manufacture of fifty thousand planes annually many thought, it was ridiculous, but by 1944, America was making ninety-six thousand planes yearly. Technology thrived.
Another aspect that led to the United States to be a super policeman was because of the Mahan’s naval strategy. Captain Alfred Mahan of 1840-1914 was a historian and naval officer of American origin. He was inclined to Jomini’s policy principles to claim that in the approaching years if one had control of the waters, he would have control over resources and trade that was essential to pay for the war. His idea was, in the clashes between Britain and France during the 18th century, the control of the ocean over naval control was the determining aspect in the result and hence, the power over the sea trade was minor to the control in the war. Mahan said that the country gained control over the sea by focusing on the naval force at a point where they will master or destroy the rival’s battle fleet. He assumed that the actual objective was the rival’s fleet in a marine war.
International incidences since World War II where America had taken on a policing role were when the Panama Canal agreement occurred in 1978 in which United States took control and claimed that they had built. They did this when president jimmy carter negotiated the Panama treaty and got full control over the canal. The treaty improved the transportation system in the United States as it made it possible to link the pacific and Atlantic oceans together. Another incidence when the United States sent their soldier to Somalia in order to establish order and create peace in the country. They also intervened in the Korean conflict in the 1946 after World War II. The conflict happened when the North Korea were from South Korea. The United Nations immediately condemned North Korea for invading South Korea. General Douglas MacArthur hurled a bold and dangerous attack the next month that included an amphibious touchdown at the back of rival lines at Inchon in South Korea, near Seoul. General Douglas was able to unify the country. Another incidence was the United States military intervention in Lebanon in 1958 (Smyth 2012).
The driving forces that fueled international policy decisions involving the international incidents were when the United States engaged in Panama Canal agreement in order to protect their commercial interests. The Panama Canal made it possible. Another force was when the United States joined Somalia and fought in order to liberate the people since the government was a dictatorship (Cantrell&Brickey, 2009). The United States also wanted to control the natural resources in Libya.
In conclusion, the United States can be viewed as a super policeman to the world because it has been involved in the unification of many countries globally, ensure all countries are at peace to an extent of sending their soldiers there, and providing the economies of the countries affects are maintained or grow.
