The developments in the field of information technology have led to changes in almost every other field. It has thus become a general requirement that an applicant in any position provide prove that he/she possess the ability to operate the most current computer and information wizardly in that field. This paper specifically looks at the requirements of an e HIM (electronic health information manager).
Professional E-HIM
As both federal and state laws advocate for the adoption of electronic health records an integral part of health information, health facilities have been keen to ensure that the person at the helm of the department has adequate knowledge of developments in information technology. Such knowledge include comprehension in longitudinal data entry, high level of networking, web management, ability to control data movement as well as knowledge in data security among others (Clark et al, n.d).
These should be capped by qualification in the field of health. The E-HIM manager’s role includes control of data which if mixed up may lead to risking of lives of patients (Clark et al, n.d). Thus, apart from understanding the health terminology, he/she should be qualified health personnel.
Of more importance, the e-HIM should be competent in system and information technology development. This is because; the position is potentially faced with a lot of changes that require regular change in systems and at times phasing out of old systems and implementation of new ones (Clark et al, n.d).
Conclusion
The field of information technology is unpredictable. The position of professional e-Him, mainly depends with the development in the aforementioned field. Thus, while this paper has tackled on the requirements of an e Him, it is recommended that regular updating of the requirements be done. A three month update is recommendable.
