Introduction
Puerto Rico is an island off the coast of United States. It is however classified to be a nation of Latin America. The history of music in this island originates from the indigenous inhabitants, the Tainos. The Taino Indians left a great mark on the culture of Puerto Ricans owing to much of the contributions in their musical instruments, food, language and even medicine.
Much of the music from this Latin American country introduces the idea of creativity in both the music and lyrics. The country being a close neighbor to Jamaica finds its music also influenced by the Jamaican.
Although the country was originally populated by Tainos for centuries, the island was taken over by Christopher Columbus. Columbus was a Spanish voyager and took over this island together with the United States around 1493. He colonized the island for over 400 years and the indigenous population was finally wiped out because of epidemic diseases. This owes to the reason as to why Puerto Rican music is highly sung in Spanish language. Despite attempts to keep the culture of the indigenous Tainos the culture of the Spanish internationals set roots into the country men.
The culture developed by the Puerto Ricans has been a great imitation of the reggaeton. This is a music that originates from the Jamaican nation. However reggaeton is a new invention and it is bomba and plena that has long been the most popular music genres.
The imitation of music and incorporation of other foreign cultures has been the key to production of the rich music found in this Latin American country. The rich music also boasts of dance rich in culture of the original inhabitants of the country.
