Love, care and good perception by other people is all what makes an individual happy. However in life there comes situation when the people close to you such as peers, family members act in manner that you feel disowned or mistreated. These occasions are normal and could be as a result of real mistreatment but in most cases the victim might have had a different perception of occurrence. At the spot of action the victim is not aware of the nature of the situation but later the meaning as well as the lesson to be learned from the occurrence reveals itself. The life of Arnold Spirit junior in The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian is not different from what many students undergo including the hardship and can be used to express what many students I being included have gone through. Arnold was born in the Indian community and had so many abnormalities but had a great ambition to take life into his own hands.
With a great mind and open mind, being in a performing schools where there are plenty of resources that are not available but reliable as well as up to date has been my dream. This has been my vision and given that the schools management are different all my requests have been turned down. I particularly believe that a modern library can greatly contribute to the academic performance of any student. My urge was to perform well in school so that I can better my future as well as make my mother proud of me. My father had passed away when I was seven years. However, it did not find it smooth in my dream to succeed. My opinion to the administration to update the library with the recent materials has always been declined. This situation is similar to that of Arnold as this is what made him leave the reservation school. Moreover many classmates do not support the idea and are more into the modernization of infrastructure and buildings which seems to be the main objective of the school administration. The school’s opinion is therefore contrary to that of Arnold hence he had no otherwise other than to leave the school and go to a better one where his ideas and suggestions will adequately be looked into.
In support of these agenda, I once organized a peaceful demonstration that was to be undertaken by my fellow students to show the importance of a modern library. In my opinion this was not a criminal offense and was made to have our rights catered for as students. Therefore it was to my expectation that I would get maximum support from all the students and thus the project would run smoothly. Contrary, during the material day, many of students came up with a different argument that the school had been treating the students fairly. Their arguments were based the new structured that had been created, the introduction of the new diet as well as recruitment of new tutors. This is similar to junior’s situation, his decision to join the whites school was taken down by the relatives and friends including his best friend Rowdy. Entering the new school, everyone discriminated Arnold due to race and his brightness being overlooked. He therefore finds it very difficult to survive in the whites’ school due to the massive discrimination.
With my friend being convinced otherwise, they retrieved, leaving me in the limelight. With all the frustrations and the plan having leaked to the school administration I was termed a criminal and having gone against the school rules and regulations. My situation was different from that of Junior as apart from being left my friends, I was proved guilty. At that moment none of my friends stood up to witness that the planned was a peaceful demonstration and not a violent strike as said. Just like in the fight between Arnold and the classmate, I was all alone in the fight against the school disciplinary committee. In Arnold’s situation, at the end the all his actions were neutralized by his performance in basketball, although most of his classmates were against him, the coach gave him hope which is contrary to my situation where everyone was against me.
During my first year in secondary school, I happened to break my leg when playing hockey. A friend of mine had accidentally hit me with a hockey stick. My leg broke on the spot. I was taken to the hospital but nothing could be done since the fracture was too large. From that day henceforth I had to walk on three; limping like a frog. My classmates started shunning me from that day. They did not consider me as their equal. Severally, some even hurled abuses to me and severely mistreated me. This is similar to what Arnold undergoes. He has poor eyesight, oversized head, forty-two teeth and frequently experiences stutters and so many other physical problems. This makes him to be mistreated and beaten by the other. They even go to the extent of giving him very offensive nicknames such “globe” and “retard”. This displays the kind of mistreatment that those with physical problems receive.
