Gateway youth services is a large multi-service agency offering a mix of community-based as well as residential services to children and teens suffering from emotional and behavioral problems.
In recent times, the agency has suffered a decline in the number of clients. The decline in clients was triggered by one case where a teenager undergoing treatment at the agency committed suicide. Factors that led to the teenager committing suicide have been traced way back to the top management. Since the installation of a new CEO at the agency, operations changed since the new CEO came in with a new leadership style which was harsh and unfriendly to other employees. Employees work best under good conditions and perform even better when provided with motivational stimuli.
The new CEO made changes such as transferring experienced staff to a new program that he is heading. This left the agency with new and inexperienced staff who are forced to work under immense pressure and poor working conditions without appropriate training. Besides that, communication flow within the organization was poor since the CEO imposed his ideas and desires on the rest of the employees without giving any chance for suggestions. Salary raises also became a matter of contention since the CEO reserved huge raises for himself and few other top managers, leaving out a very small portion to be shared among the remaining many.
All these factors thereby led to poor service delivery, disorganization in the agency, as well as a bad reputation. All other stakeholders such as the donors have also felt the effect of the changes. With this adding to the fact that a death was reported at the agency, clients have become averse to the agency and prefer to go to other agencies where there is some order.
