Research in practice
Some of the ways nurses can use research in practice
Nursing research is usually purposed at generating new nursing knowledge or reinforcing existing knowledge by seeking answers to pertinent questions regarding nursing practice. Therefore, using research in nursing practice involves disseminating and using research findings in nursing practice (Houser, 2012, p. 3). Accordingly, there are several ways through which nurses can use research in their practice, some of which include:
- Evidence-based practice that stem from nursing research. Evidence-based practice enable nurses provide efficient patient care practices.
- Providing improved healthcare services arising from the results of nursing research
- Providing enhanced therapeutics (Houser, 2012, pp. 3-16)
An example of a clinical problem that would benefit from research to determine or confirm the effectiveness of nursing practice
There are several clinical problems that can be solved through research. For example, research can be used to solve pressure ulcer development in clinically ill patients. In particular, nursing professionals can review research regarding the appropriate strategies and measures that can be used to prevent the development of pressure ulcers among clinically ill patients. Additionally, nurses can interact with other nursing professionals in other departments, organizations and countries to determine what they do and how effective their strategies are in preventing pressure ulcer development and/or treating pressure ulcers effectively. The research would then lead to the improvement in nursing practices. Such a research would be a qualitative study mainly because there is not numerical data collected during the study. For instance, if a nurse was to interview other nurses on how they prevent pressure ulcer development, there would be no numerical data that would be given. Instead, the results of such a study would involve giving opinions.
