Introduction
Motivation is an urgent aspect in I-O Psychology because it helps determine the kind of steps the psychologist takes. Motivation levels determine the behaviour and productivity of individuals at their work place. It also gives them a positive attitude towards work and other people. From a personal point of view, motivation is any act that induces positive attitude and energy towards achieving something.
Many authors define motivation as the inducement of incentives that give people the will to work hard to achieve specified objectives. Mainly, this definition is given with the work place setting in mind. However, motivation could be at personal level, and could be about academics, sports in addition to the work place. The difference between my definition and that of other authors is that it can fit into many other scenarios. The incentive part, which is highly emphasized when focusing on the workplace, is replaced by the general word. The general wording of the definition allows one to use the word in many other scenarios.
Unified definition
It is necessary that a unified definition for motivation be developed. This definition should be general enough to cover various scenarios where motivation. This will help avoid cases of confusion or limiting other scenarios where motivation applies. In case there is no unified definition, people will limit the use of motivation to a work place setting and ignore other settings.
Conclusion
Therefore, the definition of motivation has been restricted to few scenarios. It makes the use of the work by psychologists in different situations to cause confusion. There should be a unified definition that would make it possible to define all scenarios involved with motivation using one definition.
