Introduction
There have been several issues reported in the daily newspapers worldwide. However, the reports have different versions depending with the understanding media house of the story itself. The media houses report issues depending on their take of the issues at hand. This paper aims at identifying these differences in reporting issues in the society. It is also important to understand reasons behind the differences and what should be done to see to it that the media reports incidences without distortion.
The current issues that have been reported that caught many people’s eyes include the story in BBC news on the Korean nuclear weapon. According to the report, Korea decided to remove missiles of 2 medium ranges from the coastal site where it was to be launched. This tension on the peninsula, a US official said. BBC also reported that Pyongayang suspected of preparing to launch attacks in the region following the launch of the 2 missiles. The threats were as a result of new sanctions imposed on North Korea by the united nations in March After its third test nuclear attack. BBC also reported that North Korea had been angered by US and South Korea presidents. The AFP news agency reported that The Musuda missiles had been ready to launch at any time but North Korea had moved them, according to a US defence official who declined to be mentioned.
Another report indicated that a senior government official had backed saying that Pyongyang appeared to have lifted its highest combats alerts. According to the report, also a senior united states official who worked in the national security council issued a warning stating categorically that it was premature to celebrate yet because of the North Korea’s unpredictable behavior, it was premature to celebrate anything yet. Owing to what was seen, one of the pentagon spokesman by the name George Little said that what was being seen was mere provocation pause though it was beneficial to the peace and stability in Korea.
Despite the fact that the North Korea disclosed their missiles of medium range during their military parade in the year 2010, they had no opportunity to test it. The news agency reported that last month, South Korea raised an alert concerning the launching of the missiles as a vital threat besides indications that Pyongyang was preparing to launch. It was also reported that at least one ballistic missile with an estimated 3000km range had been fuelled ad is ready for launch.
The BBC reported that a test launch could violate the resolution made during the 1718 and passed in 2006 by the united nation security council. This resolution states “North Korea was expected not to conduct any nuclear test further or even launch a ballistic missile.” According to the news agency, Pyongyang had issued several threats in response to the UN sanctions against North Korea. Warnings included: attack in Japan, South Korea and US military bases and a promise to start a nuclear reactor.
Reporting the same issue of North Korean nuclear weapons, North Korean news reported that North Korea is not giving up soon. This shows that even the special envoy to China Choe Ryong may not have a positive negotiation with China. According to official Xinhua news service, Choe said to president Xi Jing, North Korea was ready and willing to negotiate with different parties so as some of the pertinent issues and to ensure that peace and stability prevails in the region. This shows that although North Korea claims that it committed to nuclear talks, the talks may not bear any fruits since the country is determined to test or launch the nuclear weapons. It is also reported that the country will not give up on the nuclear weapon since it provides it with diplomatic leverage and legitimacy.
Talks had stalled in 2008 when North Korea walked out of talks and just one year later, Pyongyang started developing nuclear weapons once more. It went farther by making this a law in its parliament. The silence of North's official Korean Central News Agency on concession and quoting Choe as saying that Pyongyang was committed to maintaining friendship with China. The news agency reported that there is little hope in the North Korea giving up on the nuclear weapons.
Another report states that North Korean state media said that the country’s leader Kim Jong-un had ordered his missile units to be ready to strike US and South Korea. This was translated by South Korea as a step towards readiness to test their nuclear weapons on the South Korea and US. The report indicated that the US criticized the North Korean threats which came just after US unusual practice bombing in South Africa. It is not clear whether this is what provoked North Korea to issue the threats to South Korea and US. Responding to the threats, US stated, “The U.S is able to protect itself together with their allies
This is because South Korea and the US have been having joint military operation and this might be what worries North Korea. Moreover, this action by North Korea strained the relationship between North Korea and China. Chinese foreign minister is said to have summoned the North Korean ambassador to China to inform that China is not happy with its determination to test their nuclear weapons. In Asia and Pacific, it was reported that Korea confirms third nuclear weapons. It was reported that North Korea conducted an underground explosion of what they called “miniaturized” nuclear weapon.
This comes after weeks of North Korean threats to the US and South Korea. This third test is considered to be a preparation for more tests of their nuclear weapons. This was considered to be the under the new leadership of Kim Jong and an indication that he ready to confront US and South Korea. This was however, predicted by the UN and Japan. Kim Jong has been silent and his communication about the weapons has been unpredictable since he does not clearly show his intension to stop the nuclear weapon tests. It is also reported that Kim Jong is keen on confronting US rather than using diplomacy. North Korea has been facing pressure to stop it plans on nuclear production but it is not willing to give up on this issue. Sources say that the country has been planning to produce the nuclear weapon to show its superiority over other nations and to threaten the US, which is considered a superpower in the world. Earlier before the third test, North Korea had sent a long-range rocket into orbit, which they claimed was a scientific purpose. After the rocket blast, both the United Nation and the United strengthened sanctions against North Korea.
Conclusion.
In conclusion, what I have learnt from these media coverage is that one has to compare news coverage to get the truth of the matter at hand. The issue of nuclear production in North Korea has been a threat not only to US or UN but to the world at large. Nuclear weapons are dangerous and their production is putting everyone at risk thus making a world social issue. Concerning media coverage on the nuclear issue of the North Korea, it is clear that the different media houses report the same issue in different ways. For example, North Korea News reported that Kim Jong-un will not give up nuclear weapons anytime soon.
In its coverage, the fact that NK is not ready to give up is emphasized and a brief history of the president and his intension to continue producing the nuclear weapons. Asia and Pacific media report that North Korea confirms the third nuclear test. It covers the preparation and the third testing of the nuclear weapons in Korea North. We also get to know that North Korea conducted an underground explosion which they claimed was a scientific operation.
