Introduction to the video program
"Kitchen Nightmares" is an episode that forecasted the ill happenings and the mix happenings which used to take place in the kitchen of the ABC Restaurant. This Restaurant was started by a couple named as Samy and Amy and was titled as Amy's Baking Company, started in 2006, in Phoenix. Amy had a dream to work as a Cook and wanted to start the Restaurant. So after much preparation they start this bakery company.
The bakery company was visited by many customers. But all of these customers faced some or the other problems. The customers used to complain that there was some problem in the food. The company did not not served good meals. The food that was generally served by the bakery company involved pizzas, hamburger and burgers. The customers complained about each and every food item. The customers also complained about the delay that had to be faced by the people in the Restaurant. They had to wait for a long time before they were served with the food stuffs. Thus visiting this Restaurant was nothing less than a nightmare for them.
But this was not the biggest problem of the Restaurant. Instead, the Restaurant owner and the wife of Samy, hated to face criticism. They did not like to be criticised and whenever the customer said something or complained regarding the food. They simply used to fight with him or her and asked him not to continue visiting. They never accepted the fact that their food was not good. They had mouth clashes with the customers’ every day and had to face regression from the customers. They had trust on their food. It was the very first Restaurant in the world where the customer was not respected again.
After the entry by chief Ramsey in the company, there was a Session of general introduction, in the same the couple told about the problem that they had to face.
Analysis of the action of the Characters:
Amy: Amy is the lady who does not like to receive the criticism at all. She is a woman who gets agitated quite easily. In spite of the fact that she is not making food she gets agitated to who so ever comes to her and complains about the food. Thus, she depicts the nature similar to angry women who fail to understand different scenario. She is a selfish person who does not care about the people at all. The firing of the waiter Katie is a very obvious example of the same. She could not tolerate if someone negligees to whatever she finds is correct. Arguing with people is another part of her nature. She has a tendency to argue a lot. Even if someone says something that may be beneficial for her, she will begin to ponder off her argument on the same. Thus, she is a lady who has been impacted by selfhood. This kind of behaviour has been explained in the study Oneself as Another by Paul Recoeur where self obsession may be defined as the concept that involves examining of one's own personal identity by investigating the relationship that is established between the identity of one’s own self and that of others. Thus, being oneself may be dependent on an understanding of one's own identity of selfishness. He in his research understands that one and the individual identity is dependent on the impact of the other people. If the impact of the other people would not be supportive, the person may develop a tendency of selfishness that may leads to such a high degree where the person just thinks about one's own self and no one else. In his writing, Paul, argues that selfhood nature of one person implies the behaviour of otherness to such a High-level that it may lead to an obsessive level where a person becomes agitated of her own self. In the work he says that it is actually what a person utters, which marks the highest importance for a person. This can be demonstrated as a voice that forms the basis of the linguistic operations of the highest precision value (Paul Recoeur, 1986).Thus, he concludes by saying the fact that the human body belongs to the world and does not relate to something that is uttered or spoken. The strangest part of the same is that the body does not proffer outside with the breath, and this actually articulated by the phonics.
Ramsay: Ramsay is the character who is helpful, talented cook and gives valuable suggestions. He expresses concerns for the people around him. He waits again and again so that the people in that restaurant can understand the reason of their works. If we compare his nature with the research that has been mentioned in the research by Paul Recoeur. In the studies Paul, examines the human identity based on the investigation that he concluded between the analysis on the philosophy and hermeneutics. In this, Ricoeur explains one's personal identity and the narrative identity by comparing the opposition between the selfhood and that between sameness and also to understand that how they are interrelated with one another. He says that following the ethics is the aim of the personal identity. Ramsey, in a similar way followed all the ethics which were to be represented by the personal actions, but he further adds that “mortality is according to the social norms." This means that mortality should be in accordance with the society, and it's norms around (Laced Tirade,2014). He stated that there is a distinction between once self esteem and selfishness. Ramsay is a good cook and has his own identity and self esteem. He is a person who is not selfish, and he follows the hermeneutics approach quite well. But the society around him, that is the people with him he was talking, he was getting uncomfortable.
After this, the chef left from the place and promised to return back for the dinner. In the dinner time, he directly entered the kitchen where he told Amy that the pizza was undercooked. To this, Amy responses in a very negative manner. She said that she had seen the dough of the pizza, and it was not at all raw, instead she found it quite crispy before serving. When he complained about the spreading of the truffle oil and the cheese in the burger, she begins to have verbal clash with the chef. She did not accept even a single flaw that was proposed by the chef. With the clash, the chef even asked her to stop selling those products. With all such events, the chef got really angry over the couple and came to the customers’ arena. He said to the customers that they did not prepare good and healthy food. When he asked the husband to tell the wide about the bad food and the customer complains he denied. He tried to make Samy realize about the wrong that he is doing.
After this, he made them realize that the tip that they are taking from the waiter is wrong. They are doing it wrong because the tip is the right of the server or the waiter and should not be taken by the restaurant owner. On denying for the same, chef Ramsey went to the people and told them the fact that their money that is given as the tips from the server goes back directly to the waiter.
After this, the kitchen was closed all of a sudden and all the people left from the restaurant. Amy with her hostile nature, asked Katie, the waiter to quit the job immediately hearing which she was into the burst of tears. She said that she did not do anything. Chef Ramsey felt really bad when Katie was fired all of a sudden just because she answered a small question correctly.
self designation: Self Designation may be determined as giving the designation to oneself. Amy has given herself the self designation of a good cook. She has considered that she has made good food at every instance. She does not listens to anyone, be it the customers or be it the chef Ramsey. Self designation has been described in the character of Amy and this has lead to the quarrel with the customers.
Ascription: Amy acknowledges herself got whatever she does, though that is not correct. If we consider the Hermeneutic approach of Psul Recour, the nature of ascription of one own self is considered as fatal. Similarly, her nature has proved to be fatal for the Resturant.
Imputation : In the video, imputation has been done wrongly on one another. Amy is always imputing the people around her. Imputation can be correct or it may be wrong. When the customers are imputing Amy, they are correct. This is because these people does not get good food. Also, there are several other issues with the food. Thus, their imputation is correct. On the other hand, Katie has been imputed by Amy which is wrong. Paul Recoeur says that the person should not impute another person wrongly. Finally due to wrong imputation by Amy and not understanding and respecting the imputation by the customers, the Resturant comes to a closure.
Attestation: The Attesation has been done by chef Ramsey where he went to the Kithcen to verify the wrong that is going on in the Kitchen. He finds the proof of the wrong. But his Attesation is not being followed by Amy.
Conclusion
Chef Ramsey again tried to help the couple by explaining them. This time the couple began to fight within themselves. After the mutual consolidation, Chef Ramsey explained the bad things about their food, nature, behaviour and business. He left the place with a promise to arrive in the evening. But when he came back in the morning he did not found a couple. He tried to meet the few old employees of the restaurant who were again fired by the couple. They also explained the same things which the chef observed throughout the day. They told that around 50 people have been fired.
When he went again to the restaurant he found a couple there, he initially showed his anger for removing the waiter Katie. Also, he told that he had met Jessica and Henry who were the two employees who were also fired by them. The behaviours that have been discussed in the video are according to the Paul Ricour's journal on oneself as another.
The characters in the above shows the Hermeneutic approach as they did not changed themselves according to the situations. Be it the customer, be it her husband, be it the chef Ramsey, Amy always used to show off her anger and never understood the need for the change. She was possessing the behaviour which was similar to the work that has been decried by Paul Recour analysis in Oneness as another. If we consider the behaviour of the characters and compare the same with the modern theory of action. This is because the characters in the story are within their own bases soon and does not tends to change. Also it has been explained that that a person cannot change any other person if the other person does not wants to change. This is clearly reflected in the Paul Recour's work which also states that if the person tries to change something or someone, he or she could be changed only if they want to change themselves.
