Even though the United States is the country of freedom and equality, Muslims Americans are feeling bad dealing and doubting from Americans people toward them. Also Muslims from other country are suffering from special procedures in airports against Muslims only. According to Gallup Organization” in January 21, 2010 In U.S., Religious Prejudice Stronger against Muslims 43% of Americans admits to feeling some prejudice toward followers of Islam. More than 4 in 10 Americans are admitting to feeling at least "a little" prejudice toward Muslims.” 1. They have bad feeling toward Islam due to 9/11 in the United States 2. The media used Islamic phobia as attractive topic to get maximum number from people follow them.3.
Clearly, my research is about why Americans have prejudice against Islam. I want to correct bad Ideas which Americans society has about Islam. The Islam religion had about 1500 year before 9/11 happened but Americans only see this day. Muslims population is ¼ of total the world population but they speak only about Bin Ladin and Algaadah. Bin laden killed hundreds of thousands of people in Pakistan, Iraq, Yemen, and the Kingdom Saudi Arabia, but they see only 3000 people killed in Manhattan. The Muslims and Islam religion are victims of Extremists of Islam from one side and Extremists of Jewish and Christian from another side who used accidents through media to Incite American society against Islam and Muslims.
Functionalist Theory
Functionalist theory focuses on the dysfunction that results from the prejudice against Muslims. Oppressing or exploiting Islam results to high cost to the communal institutions; rendering social stability at risk and may result to violence among the groups. Functionalists identify that by nurturing prejudice, the people in mobile city are able to create a feeling of supremacy over the Muslims. This strengthens the people in mobile city self-concept
Conflict Theory
The idea of false consciousness by marx in the present context facilitate in identifying inaccurate beliefs of minority which serve to bring about their social, sexual, and economic domination. A consciousness is "false" when it brings about inequality by leading Muslims to believe that they are mediocre. At the most common level, marx refers to false consciousness as the harboring of fake beliefs that maintain one's own oppression". For instance, different Muslims view themselves as competitors rather than associates in the fight against the people in mobile city. The conflict between people in mobile city and Muslims has been increasing since they struggle against each other.
Symbolic Interactions Theory
According to Herbert Blumer theory,: three basic premises that defined the symbolic interactions perspective. 1- Humans beings behave toward things on the basis of the meanings they ascribe to those things. 2- The meaning of such things is derived from, or arises out of, the social interaction that one has with others society. 3-the meaning are handled in and modified through an interpretive process used by person in dealing with the things her or she encounters. [Ok, good!] First of all the media is one of strong weapons in this century that Muslims do not have on the united states land that let huge gap between Muslims and Americans citizens. Also media used the picture of 9/11 accident and 3000 victims who dead in that day as offends of all Muslims not a crime done by terror group that kill Muslims also. There are 100 000s of Muslims killed by bin laden and his group in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Pakistan , Iraq, and Afghanistan That media did not cover those events as 9/11 and did not explained this picture to American citizen correctly. Secondly, the American citizen behaviors changes toward Islam as that media describe Islam. Americans prejudice against Islam increased with increased the reports about 9/11 for example we see the prejudice against Islam increase every Septembers last 10 years. In contrast, many Americans who workers in Islamic countries or have Muslims friends they were not agree with media shows from first day after 9/11 and denied many points the media state. Also, many Americans read about Islam and Muslims and changed their idea or change their religion to Islam
Hypotheses:
I suppose that when the media in the U.S.A. increasing show of 9/11 accident the prejudice toward Islam increased.
Research method:
I recruited participants at different institutions.120 participants from Miami University, 90participants from Mexico State University and 115 participants from the University of Hawaii. Participants we asked to measure attitude and to point out the degree of prejudice to which they felt towards Muslims, Christian, Jews and Buddhists. The emotions and evaluations included a great deal, some, a little and none at all. Participants were also asked to state their feeling when interacting with members of the respective Muslim religion and the reasons that resulted to these feelings.
The variables that were obtained were used to predict prejudice were also tested to ascertain that Americans could discriminate the Muslims at the conceptual level
The survey
The question: thinking honestly about your feelings, how much prejudice, if any, do you feel toward each of the following religious groups? The results from all the schools were as follows
The result
Now we see More than 4 in 10 Americans (43%) admit to feeling at least "a little" prejudice toward Muslims (43% vs.57% not have prejudice at all) .However, the negative Attitudes Toward Muslims and Islam are increased after 9/11 each year as we see 31% not favorable at all vs. 9% very favorable
