As business people, we know our staff is one of our greatest assets. Maintaining a stable staff will help us weather the economic storms ahead. Working together with our staff will minimize employee turnover and greatly benefit the company. For them to take pay cuts in hard times while we reap the rewards in the more profitable days is unconscionable. Not only is not morally justifiable, it is causing us to lose some of our most valuable staff members. Our staff believes that the cuts and bonuses should be shared among all employees. They reason that if they, as employees, contribute to the business success, and performance based bonuses are given out to employees at the end of the year then they, as employees deserve bonuses..
Our former business model of distributing cuts among the hourly worker and bonuses to the salaried management personnel seems to be no longer viable if we wish to retain our most skilled hourly staff members. Both classes of workers are employees. In the past hourly employees were rewarded by overtime and salaried staff received bonuses. However, recent cuts were to hourly workers and for the most part, increased hours just restored them to where they were. The company is enjoying higher profits and only a few hourly workers are not getting a similar increase in pay.
The skilled staff we are in danger of losing is not the lower echelon; they do immediately get increased hours as production increases. These staff members that are considering other employment are the educated staff members who support the salaried workers. As we never increase our own work load, these staff members do not have the same opportunity to restore their lost wages. So I ask you, do you want to risk losing the people who do your work for you? If you do not, I recommend we restructure our performance related bonus system to create an appearance of fairness.
Once you have constructed the document, write an analysis of the document explaining where and how you have incorporated the features listed above. Grammar and spelling count on both the document itself and the analysis. There will be no chance to revise this test once it is submitted. A page for each document. I will provide the notes.
I used ethos as the opening sentence and established a common background. I also created a common opponent in the economic climate assets. Then I introduce pathos in the form of friendliness because we are working together and in shame that out staff takes cuts while we enjoy bonuses. I further developed the pathos element with the fear that we will lose skilled staff because of it.
The logic was that cuts and bonuses should be shared among all employees. If they are employees and contribute to the business success, they should also reap the rewards. Toulman’s argumentation is addressed in looking at the two classes and how they were rewarded as the data. Introducing the variable increases to the hourly workers that usually only let them make what they used t, but nothing more as the qualifier. That some hourly workers are making more is the rebuttal. Perelman and Olbrechts-TYTECA establishes common ground by establishing socially determined facts.
The second to the last sentence asks a rhetorical question. The last sentence is testimony. Irony is used throughout.
